Description:
New York City: Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, 1990. Very good. Audio cassette with around 30 minutes of playing time. Cassette is very good with light dust soiling, tape plays clearly. This is a promotional for GLAAD narrated by Harvey Fierstein and filled with recordings from radio and television that are exceedingly awful. At the start of the tape, Fierstein explained, "many of these statements may offend and disturb you but it's important that we listen to them together, just as it's important that we do something about them." He also said that "no minority is subjected to media sanctioned defamation than gay men and lesbians," and that the tape's purpose was to learn why "this hateful talk is so dangerous and learn what it is you can do about it." That's followed by short segments from unidentified voices played over foreboding background music and saying such things as "[homosexuality is the] worst possible sin or socially disruptive act that a person can commit." A radio call… Read More

Description:
[San Antonio, Texas?]: Johnson Brothers Printers, [188?]. Good. 7½" x 5 1/8". Stitched illustrated wrappers. pp. 51. Good: wrappers chipped, portion of spine perished; faint distributor's stamp and penciled date of 1888, leaves lightly toned. This is a land promotional for San Antonio with a large portion of the text devoted to the area's climate and its benefits to the sick, with a number of testimonials from doctors and those healed. The book's introduction mentioned that "San Antonio needs no exaggerated description" while pointing out that "its charming, bracing, health-giving climate-its historic interest-its pleasing scenery-its comfort-its hospitable, educated, refined, thriving, contented people, and its rapid growth in population and wealth, makes it to-day the most complete and attractive resort on the American continent." There are also sections on nearby cities and resorts, hunting and fishing, the history of the area and its plans for near future growth. The rear wrapper is… Read More

Description:
N.P.: Department of the Army Directorate, United States Dependents Schools, European Area, 1974. 10¼" x 7¾". Stapled printed thin card wrappers. Pp. [2], 34. Very good: all leaves three-hole punched, possibly as issued, corner crease and light stains to front wrapper. This is a book focused on Jewish American history and culture. Description:
Denver, Colorado: The Directory, Ltd., a division of SEA Corporation, 1980. Very good +. 9" x 4". Stapled self wrappers. pp. 80. Very good plus: wrappers rubbed; internally fine. This is a rare Colorado LGBTQ+ periodical/directory hybrid that was apparently intended as a quarterly and whose title is a bit of a misnomer. It's not a directory in the sense that there is no organizational structure nor any generic line-by-line business listings separated into geographic areas. It's not quite a news source as there are only three short articles, one of which has nothing to do with Colorado. The book has nearly 150 business listed with display ads throughout, and a three page alphabetized list of those businesses in numerous categories. Listings are statewide, with an emphasis on Denver, and includes standard fare such as bars, baths and restaurants but also includes a chimney sweep and mobile disco. The closest we've come to any insight as to the publishers or compilers is that an Ed Novak and Steve… Read More

Description:
[N.p.]: self published, 1937. 10¾" x 7½". Stapled wrappers. pp. [36]. Good: wrappers with moderate wear, some light staining to front wrap, light scattered foxing, center bifolium detached, one poem with five small inked checkmarks and a few inked numbers, two line dedication crossed out in pencil, inscription in crayon on one page, though possibly by the author (see below). A collection of 52 poems by the son of Frank Albert Young, Sr., an important African American sports writer. This is the first of at least three books of poetry issued by Young, Jr. The little we could learn of him is that he was living in Washington, D.C. in 1940 when the Pittsburgh Courier mentioned the publication of this book and he was the director of the Harlem YMCA writer's workshop as of 1945. There is an inscription in pencil by Young to a "Thomas" on the title page that is dated 1938. "To Thomas" is overwritten in crayon. The dedication page has an owner inscription dated 1939 written by a sixth grader at New… Read More
