Description:
1547 LAW Andrea Alciati Commentary on Justinian Codex Catholic & Byzantine FOLIO

"Plenitudo potestatis nihil aliud est quam violentia." (The fullness of power is nothing more than violence).
― Andrea Alciati

Andrea Alciati was a 16th-century Italian author who is best known for his famed book of Emblemata. And while his emblems brought him recognition, he also published an important annotated commentary on Justinian's 'Codex'. During his study of law in Bourges, Alciati began writing 'Ad Rescripta Principum Commentarii'.

'Codex', part of 'Corpus Juris Civilis', was the Justinian's attempt at organizing the laws in a systematic manner. Recognizing that the law system needed to be fixed, 'Codex' covers ecclesiastical law, criminal and civil law, the way laws were written and put into effect, duties of government officials, and proper administrative regulations.

This 1547 edition is notable for being the last edition published during Alicati's lifetime.

Description:
1547 Saint Anselm of Canterbury BIBLE Epistles of Paul Benedictine Scholasticism

"I believe in order that I may understand."
– Anselm of Canterbury
Saint Anselm of Canterbury was an 11th-century Benedictine monk and philosopher. While Anselm was relatively unknown and unrecognized for his philosophical views during his lifetime, he has since been considered the founder of scholasticism and writing about the existence of God in an academic manner rather than purely theological. The ODCC refers to Anselm as being 'the most luminous and penetrating intellect between St. Augustine and Thomas Aquinas…and the father of scholasticism'. Many of his writings set the stage for a European period of innovating logic, ethics, mysticism, and metaphysics.
This 1547 printing of the works of Anselm features his commentary on the Epistles of Paul.

Description:
1675 Confessions of Saint Augustine Catholic & Protestant Bible Theology Elzevier

Augustine of Hippo was a 5th-century early Christian church philosopher and theologian. While most known for his work 'City of God', he also wrote many other treatises on aspects of the Christian faith. His stance on free will vs. predestination and fatalism was supported by and still is supported by, the Catholic Church, as his teachings on free will are consistent with modern doctrine.

One of Augustine's most important works was 'Confessions' – a collection of shorter treatises that were autobiographical in nature. In fact, because of this, it is often considered the very first Western autobiography ever written.

This 1675 edition was published in Lyon by the famed Daniel Elzevier, edited by Henricus Somallius.

Description:
1562 Saint Augustine City of God + Spanish Luis Vives Commentary Philosophy

Augustine of Hippo was a 5th-century early Christian church philosopher and theologian. He is most known for his work 'City of God'. 'City of God' was a response to the assertions that the rise of Christianity was the cause of the decline of Rome. In this work, Augustine discusses the existence of God and evil, an all-knowing God, original sin, and Christian doctrines. Augustine sought to denounce much of the magic and pagan worship that was rampant throughout the known world.

Numerous commentaries were published on Augustine's 'City of God', including that of Juan Luis Vives. This commentary, which was first published in 1522, proved to be Vives' ticket to become the personal tutor to Princess Mary I of England.

This 1562 edition was published in Lyon by Junta.

1649 Encyclopedia of Science Mathematics FOLIO Chasseneuz Catalogus Mundi

Barthélemy de Chasseneuz was an early 16th-century French jurist who, curiously, made his fame by defending a group of rats who were put on trial for destroying barley crops in Autun, France. And while the majority of Chasseneuz's works focus on law, in 1529 he wrote an encyclopedia describing basic knowledge – 'Catalogus Gloriae Mundi'. This book was a survey of every known topic with which Chasseneuz was familiar. However, the focus of the work was French heraldry and societal ranks in the 15th-century. This 1649 edition includes charming illustrations throughout including dozens of coats of arms and family crests.

Description:
1632 Saint Cyprian 1ed Bishop of Carthage Early Christian MARTYR Manutius FOLIO

"It is a persistent evil to persecute a man who belongs to the grace of God. It is a calamity without remedy to hate the happy."
― Cyprian

Cyprian was an Early Church bishop of Carthage from the 3rd-century. Cyprian was the first to write about the primacy of the Pope as it was set out in "The Unity of The Catholic Church". Most of his writings surround pastoral ministry, addressing many of the issues with the Roman government. He also determined prayer to be "the only refuge of the Christian".

This 1632 first edition of the works of St. Cyprian includes the annotated commentary of Jacobus Pamelius. It was collected and edited by William Morel and Paolo Manuzio, an exceedingly rare and desirable huge vellum-bound folio!

1585 John Calvin Institutes Christian Religion Geneva Bible Catechism Reformed

"We should ask God to increase our hope when it is small, awaken it when it is dormant, confirm it when it is wavering, strengthen it when it is weak, and raise it up when it is overthrown."
― John Calvin

A rare, 16th-century Latin translation of John Calvin's "Institutio Christianae relgionis", or "Institutes of the Christian Religion." It is still widely read and considered highly influential in Western world Christianity. At its core, "Institutes" was intended to provide Christians inspiration in their living, as well as being an introductory work to those new to the faith. It attacked those who opposed Calvin's teachings, most notably Roman Catholicism.

"Institutes" was immensely popular during the 16th-century and has since been held in the same respect as Augustine's "City of God," Aquinas's "Summa Theologica," Melanchthon's "Loci Communes" and other important Christian doctrines.

Description:
1696 Marsham Chronicus Canon Jewish & Egyptian RITES Hebrew Greek Latin

John Marsham was a 17th-century English historian known for his expertise and study on chronology – from Old Testament history to Egypt and British. His most detailed and elaborate work was 'Chronicus Canon'; a work which distinguished Hebrew, Greek, and Egyptian histories and how they pertained to the Old Testament. According to the NGBD, Marsham, in this work,
"was the first person who proposed to the learned world the hypothesis of four collateral dynasties of Egyptian kings, reigning at the same time over different districts of that country; in order to reduce the extravagant chronology of the Egyptian records to a conformity with that of the Hebrew Scriptures. He also supposes that the Jews derived several of their rites from the Egyptians"

Salvian was a 5th-century writer who is primarily known for his two existing treatises. Salvian was a Christian living in Gaul during the Fall of Rome, and his most important work was dedicated to describing the events that lead to the fall.
This collection of the works of Salvian was published in Venice and includes the works of Vincent of Lerins, another 5th-century Christian monk who wrote on Roman martyrs and the heretical views of the papacy and early Catholic Church. Description:
1880 1ed Dairy Farming by Sheldon Agriculture Cattle Color Illustrated Milk Cows

John Sheldon's 'Dairy Farming' is one of, if not the most important late 19th-century British treatises on farming and maintaining dairy cattle. This book covers a variety of topics including how to breed dairy cows, feeding with plants and weeds, milking, how to sell and trade milk, as well as the milk and dairy industry in various countries including America and Canada.

While the contents of this work are important, accurate, and still viable, the color illustrations are without question the most desirable aspect of this book. Illustrated with 25 chromolithographic plates of cows, barns, and farm plans.
