Description:
Rectangular small 8vo, (8" x 5"), split calf, receipt book 1801 written on cover some faded writing on other cover, about 85 leaves. Top cover detached, rear almost detached, covers worn, small pasted label on pastedown, a few pages slightly loose, some aging and browning, and a little staining, but internally very good overall. Interesting early Rhode Island business receipt book for the Jacob Whitman & Co. Based in Providence, Whitman appears to be an auctioneer. Consignors used Whitman to sell a broad range of items, including tobacco, tea, old cloths, chairs, soap and even chocolate. Most of the writing is legible (some more than others), and many consignors signed the book to acknowledge receipt of payment. There are about 85 leaves, and information is recorded on both sides of the page.

Description:
4 pp. including stampless address leaf. To her husband, John Van Lew, Richmond, Virginia. Wear at folds, a few fold tears with no loss of text, a margin tear, but not much loss, some aging, very busy letter, but very legible; good overall. In St. Augustine, Eliza Van Lew (1798-1875) met a variety of local residents, from Spanish Cuban grandees of the Arredondo family, which had received some 300,000 acres of Florida land by royal grant, to the free African-American who drove her and her baby around town.Elizabeth Van Lew (1818-1900) was 15 years old when her mother Eliza took her ailing year-old brother to winter in Florida (Florida was still a territory when this letter was written) for his health. Elizabeth was sent to live with Abolitionist relatives while attending school in Pennsylvania. She wholeheartedly embraced her Abolitionist heritage. At the beginning of the Civil War, she brought together a hodgepodge of pro-Union sympathizers, from slaves to slaveholders, to secretly convey valuable… Read More

Description:
Engraved double page (23 1/2" x 20 1/2 "), partially hand colored, large title uncolored cartouche in upper left corner. One sheet of a two-sheet map but has a complete appearance. Expert repairs on verso at centerfold, slight aging and browning; otherwise about near fine with a strong impression. Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724) was considered the father of German mapmaking, and in 1715 was actually appointed the Geographer to the Emperor. He founded his mapmaking business in 1702, and he would produce several major atlases between 1707 and 1716. This is a detailed and attractive map of part of the southwestern part of Germany that includes Wuerttemberg. While the map is one sheet of a two-sheet map, it has a complete appearance, and an elaborate title cartouche. Our inventory includes both sheets, but as separate maps. Van De Gohm: Antique Maps. Description:
Folio (14" x 21"), colored lithographed bird plate. Slight toning; overall bright and colorful. John Gould (1804-1881) was born in Dorset, and spent his early career years as a taxidermist. By the late 1820s he entered the publishing business, and privately published his first publication that included folio sized bird plates (A Century of Birds Hitherto Unfigured from the Himalaya Mountains). The work appeared in twenty monthly installments. This work launched a fifty-year career that would pretty much use the same format for his future publications. This plate is probably plate number three from the Birds of Europe. ODB. Gould's Works on Natural History: Index.

Description:
8vo, 2 volumes, later ¾ morocco, illustrated with 8 tinted lithographic plates, 251, 247pp.Titles and frontispieces bleached, else significant foxing throughout. Bookplate on front pastedowns. Solid set overall. ‘Eldorado’ is considered one of the best contemporary accounts of the California gold rush by a highly renowned traveler. Taylor had a great eye for detail, and shares some fascinating experiences in this work. His impressions of San Francisco, which basically presents a picture of a very busy unfinished frontier town, are especially interesting. “On every side stood buildings, of all kinds, begun or half-finished, and the greater part of them mere canvas sheds.” He was much impressed by the high prices for just about everything, but also reports that this gave opportunities for some. Musicians, for example, could earn $16 a night, and he knew of a Swiss organ girl who had earned $4,000 in six months. Taylor spends a lot of time discussing the gold rush, and… Read More

Description:
Newspaper, folio, unbound, 8pp. Dampstained, browned at edges with some foxing, early owner's ink stamp on top margin, some small tears and chips along edges, and a little creasing. Still in decent shape overall. This is one of the earliest printings of the Emancipation Proclamation, which was issued on September 22, 1862. The Emancipation Proclamation declared freedom for all slaves in any Confederate state that didn't return to the Union by January 1, 1863. Although this executive order did not actually free a large number of slaves, it set the stage for the freedom of all slaves. Coverage of the Emancipation in this newspaper begins in the middle of the first page. This newspaper article represents important coverage of a very significant event in American History. archives government exhibits emancipation website

8vo, original boards, paper spine label, folding copper engraved map, paper untrimmed, iv, 134 pp. Spine rubbed with wear, paper label faded, hinges a little tender, but still firm, minor staining to boards, some foxing within, despite a little browning and foxing, the map is in very nice shape. Overall a very presentable copy. This work is a somewhat scarce title in the original boards, and with the map of the United States. Collins indicates in his preface that this is an "enlarged edition", which will give the emigrant an accurate picture of trade, commerce, climate, agriculture and geography of the still relatively new nation. Collins describes river and overland travel, and discuses American social life, including to some extent, slavery. He covers New England and the Carolinas in his discussion, and goes as far west as Ohio and Indiana. Howes C598. Sabin 14450.
