Chicago: Fergus Printing, 1882. First edition. printed wrappers. Very Good. 12mo, 53 pages; wrappers taped at spine. Fergus Historical Series no.19. An abridged version of this appeared in the Lakeside Classics volume of 1912. London-born Charles Cleaver founded a soap manufacturing business in the South Side of Chicago, and created a business locale that became Cleaverville. Before it was annexed into Chicago, it became the first commuter suburb. His additional dealings in real estate made him well-off. Cleaver had arrived in Chicago in 1833, making these among the earliest memories of pioneers at Chicago.

London: Macmillan, 1908. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Octavo; xix, 711, [iv] adverts, publisher's cloth, a weighty book, spine and hinges repaired Illustrated with 224 sketches, and an outline map of the South Downs. "There is probably nothing at all in the book which has not been said before, and better said, but mostly in publications not accessible to the average reader." - Preface. Allcroft was inspired by the Committee on Ancient Earthworks and Fortified Enclosures. He also largely restricted himself to a discussion of earthworks with which he was personally familiar. Allcroft was a classicist, who wrote numerous books, including a Latin textbook. His interest in Roman ruins in Britain likely got him started on this volume.
