Hart was a short-lived gold mining town located in the Mojave desert, in San Bernardino County, California. It existed between 1908 and 1915. According to the Foreword, this book "is primarily a story of John and Ed Snorf, their family, and the people and places and happenings in their early lives ... It is rich in early day desert history as told by one who lived it."

An early issue of this western land promotion magazine from the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway, published from 1904 to 1938. Articles in this issue include "The Miami Ranch of Springer, New Mexico," "Farming Under Irrigation in Sunny Colorado," "In the Famous Arkansas Valley of Colorado," "Millions of Dollars, The Sugar Beet in Colorado," plus real estate listings and other ads, photographic illustrations, and a large section of "Letters for You from Prosperous Southwestern Farmers.

William Augustus Brevoort Coolidge was an American theologian and climber who lived much of his life in Europe, making many first ascents in the Alps in the 1860s-1880s. According to Neate (C58) he had "tremendous knowledge of the history of mountaineering, but was extremely quarrelsome.

Chips to corners of front wrapper and lower spine, previous owner's signature on front wrapper; internally very good. A series of letters written by Chase while traveling and first published in the Vermont Union, a newspaper he founded and edited from 1865 until his death in 1902. Here they appear in revised and corrected form, published, Chase says in the preface, due to the "general demand for information respecting New Mexico." He describes various interesting places visited in Trinidad and Denver, Colorado and Cimmaron, Taos, Pueblo, Santa Fe, Las Vegas, and Silver City, New Mexico, and disusses cattle and sheep ranching, railroads, gambling halls, vigilance committees, and more. Undated; OCLC suggests ca. 1827-1838. 5.75" x 3.75", 101 pp, with engraved frontispiece, in original cloth-backed marbled boards with paper spine label. Very good. "Designed to show the temptations and sins to which boys are often exposed on such occasions," according to a later publisher's catalogue.

London: John Weale, 1859. Softcover. Near fine. 4 x 7 inches, pp xii, 179, 24 (publisher's catalogue), in original stiff wrappers with blind-stamped design and paper label. Title page dated 1852, but publisher's catalogue dated 1859. Title written by hand on spine, spine professionally repaired, previous owners' names (most recently Henry Arthur Godson Bohn, 1900) on front free endpaper. Otherwise unmarked, clean and sound, with minimal wear; a very attractive copy of this early illustrated history of the telegraph, which describes the development of the technology and the features of many types of telegraphs then in use or experimentation. The author was a telegraph engineer who, with his brother Rev. Henry Highton, made a number of improvements to the telegraphic equipment and processes.

Upper corners rubbed, otherwise a very nice copy, in most of original acetate (or similar) dust jacket. One of 150 copies. Scollard was an American poet and writer of fiction, a professor of English at Hailton College, and husband of Jessie Belle Rittenhouse. The letter included here is a general newsy letter to an unidentified friend, dated 1885.
