According to the Foreword, this book "is primarily a story of John and Ed Snorf, their family, and the people and places and happenings in their early lives ... London: John Weale, 1859. Softcover. Near fine. 4 x 7 inches, pp xii, 179, 24 (publisher's catalogue), in original stiff wrappers with blind-stamped design and paper label. Title page dated 1852, but publisher's catalogue dated 1859. Title written by hand on spine, spine professionally repaired, previous owners' names (most recently Henry Arthur Godson Bohn, 1900) on front free endpaper. Otherwise unmarked, clean and sound, with minimal wear; a very attractive copy of this early illustrated history of the telegraph, which describes the development of the technology and the features of many types of telegraphs then in use or experimentation. The author was a telegraph engineer who, with his brother Rev. Henry Highton, made a number of improvements to the telegraphic equipment and processes.

Scollard was an American poet and writer of fiction, a professor of English at Hailton College, and husband of Jessie Belle Rittenhouse. The letter included here is a general newsy letter to an unidentified friend, dated 1885.
