Description:
Philadelphia: Published by F. W. Thomas, 1852. Rare first edition of Goepp's criticism of Kossuth. Octavo, bound in full cloth. Deaccessioned from the Library of Congress with the library's bookplate and stamp to the pastedown. In good condition. Rare. Hungarian politician Lajos Kossuth was widely honoured during his lifetime, including in Great Britain and the United States, as a freedom fighter and bellwether of democracy in Europe. In 1851, he visited America with the intention of appealing to European immigrants in the American heartland with hopes that he could rally them behind the cause of a free and democratic Hungary. During his visit, Kossuth infuriated the abolitionists by refusing to say anything offensive to the pro-slavery establishment, which, however, did not give him much support. Abolitionists said that Kossuth's "hands off" position regarding American slavery was unacceptable. Wm. Lloyd Garrison, on behalf of the American Anti-Slavery Society, published a pamphlet "exposing… Read More

c. 1920. Early 20th Century French Empire Dore bronze inkwell featuring prominently a large bronze eagle flanked by two bronze inkwells on clawed feet. Sited on a green marble base atop two bronze winged lions and two rear feet. The entire piece measures 15.25 inches long, 7.25 inches deep, and 8.5 inches tall. In fine condition. A handsome library decoration. Inkwells became popular after the Romans invaded Egypt in the first century B.C.E., where the earliest examples were used in a highly restricted quantity by Egyptian scribes. The practice of using inkwells to write fell out of primary use in the mid 20th century when fountain pens were developed and nibs were first mass-produced by Josiah Mason in Birmingham England in 1828.

Abraham de Peyster and Samuel Bayard dated January 3rd 1718, copied on April 8th 1817 by Stephen Ludlam, City Surveyor. One page, the hand-colored map details the intersection of Wall Street, Broad Street, and Kip Street (now Nassau Street) and includes the Presbyterian Church, the original City Hall, and 23 partitioned lots each labeled as owned by Abraham DePeyster or Samuel Bayard. Born in 1657 in New Amsterdam, wealthy merchant and ship owner Abraham de Peyster received numerous political appointments in New York City at the turn of the 19th century. He became the 20th mayor of New York City in 1691, a position he held for three years, and on October 4, 1698, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Judicature. Because of regular conflicts of interest that arose due to his extensive business involvement, he was recused from many cases. Despite this, he… Read More

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1980. First edition of this epic masterpiece by the author of A Clockwork Orange, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Octavo, original half cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Jose Matos, A man in search of a magician Anthony Burgess." Through the lives of these two modern men Burgess explores the very… Read More
