An interesting mycological manuscript, in that it is focused on mushroom propagation and not identification. Descriptions of individual varieties are followed by growing specifications. Some of the descriptions are accompanied by pencil depiction of the mushrooms. Internally very good; some age-toning to endpapers. In textured brown calf, lined, and with a paper title label, hand lettered. Some wear to edges and rubbing to boards. Still near very good.

Tipped-in at the front is the printed announcement "Her Majesty the Queen has been graciously pleased to accept the first numbered copy of this work". A survey of the grand collection of Staffordshire Pottery (1620-1880) assembled by Major Cyril Earle, covering the Stuart through Victorian periods. Coxsackie, NY, 1806. Two printed forms each completed in unique hand (15.5 x 21 cm. each). The earlier permit allows for Charles Titus (1760-1847) of Coxsackie to sell "spiritous liquors" in a quantity of fewer than five gallons for one year. Specifications that the liquor must not be drunk at his house, out-house, yard, or garden preclude the operation of a tavern or public house. This license is signed and sealed by Peter A. Van Bergen, Philip Conine Junr, and Jonas Bronk. Notable here is the Bronk name, a descendent of Jonas and Pieter Bronck, after whom the Bronx River, County, and Borough are named. The 1806 license-printed by Charles R. and George Webster, Albany's leading newspaper publishers and printers-permits Titus to operate a public inn or tavern for one year. Surrounding the blank menu area is an illustration of an urban setting with the silhouette of several figures including a young woman with a market basket, a lamplighter, and a figure pulling a cart. Fine.

Second, Revised Edition; originally issued in 1942. "An authoritative and comprehensive history including old New England kitchens, pantry tools, bowls, plates, mortars, buckets, tubs, the early uses of paint, means of identification, etc." (jacket text). Mary Earle Gould (1885-1975) was an early American antique collector, columnist and author, who specialized in antiques, material culture, and social customs. Early American Wooden Ware was her first book, which was followed by The Early American House (1949), Antique Tin & Tole Ware (1958), and other works. In pale green cloth, gilt-titled at the spine and on the front panel. Tiniest bit of wear to edges. In unclipped illustrated dust jacket, a bit rubbed and with some wear to top edge. Overall, very good.

First authoritative reference book on the various types of early American wooden ware and kitchen utensils. From cheese drainers and well buckets to oyster kegs and sausage guns, Gould clearly defines each tool and places it within its historical context. Small ownership stamp to half-title. In dust jacket with slight tear, otherwise very good.

Nezih Simon's second cookbook of Turkish recipes, designed to work for experts and novices alike. This book focus on the vegetarian dishes of Turkey and the Eastern Mediterranean. The author originated the first cookery and domestic science classes in Cyprus, out of which came her first book, Turkish Cookery, published by Tredolphin in 1968. Some light spotting to the bottom edge of the first few leaves. black. Color-printed card stock boards and double Wire-O binding are only a bit rubbed at edges. Ribbon on bottom edge allows the book to stand as its own easel. Generally very good or better. Signed by the author on the title page. [OCLC locates six copies (just three in the U.S.)].

Pages a bit browned from the wartime paper, pink printed wrappers a bit edgeworn and faded, otherwise very good. Scarce.

Amsterdam: De Spieghel, 1927. Portfolio (29 x 21cm), [48] pages, with twenty one hand-colored plates, all on a sturdy, thick card stock . FIRST EDITION, limited & signed, Roman numeral III of seven copies in portfolio form, signed by Bodenheim. There was also a state with 100 copies, in book form, bound in a Japanese style and printed on Japon Van Gelder. Rhymes by Lizzy Ansingh, with drawings by Nelly Bodenheim of anthropomorphic fruits, nuts and vegetables, including lemons, grapes, pears, radishes, red pepper, almonds, blackberries, apricots, cherries and leeks. The vignette on the folio and many of the plates appear not printed at all but rather were entirely done by hand. The illustrations are rich in color and originality, with a naive style and an accessible, wry humor. Bodenheim was a popular book illustrator in the Netherlands in the early twentieth century and she and Ansingh teamed up on numerous projects. Plates well preserved and clean. Pictorial wraps depict a cheerful Japanese housewife; text block age-toned; some dog ears to last few pages, otherwise very good. Scarce. [OCLC locates no copies].

London: Baker and Confectioner, 1895. Octavo, 198, x pages. Advertisements. Illustrated. FIRST EDITION. A technical manual of commercial breadmaking, from the Consulting chemist to the London Master Bakers' Society, and the author of The Dietetic Value of Bread. Contains lots of technical analysis of the principles of bread creation, as well as illustrations of the chemical activities, and equipment of breadmaking. The book is quite shaken, and several signatures are pulling. The publisher's black-titled red cloth is soiled and edgeworn, but sound. With the ownership of commercial baker John W. Tolley, who would have been working in the Continental Baking Company at the time of this book's publication. The family of companies Tolley and his son Albert Tolley was involved with were responsible for many brands of cakes and pastries, some of which, like Drake's Cakes, Twinkies, Tip-Top Bread, and the Popsicle, are still with us today. Battle Creek, Mich: Scientific Dept. of the Postum Cereal Co, 1909. Stapled booklet (21.5 x 11.5 cm.), 48 pages. Illustrated; with a list of works consulted (page 4). FIRST EDITION. A product cookbook, promoting the therapeutic aspects of cereals as food, specifically the products of the Posstum Company, including Postum, Grape-Nuts, and Post Toasties. The little work is about evenly divided, with the first half dedicated to a general description of the science (of the moment) of nutrition and diet; the second half to the manufacturing processes used to make the Postum products. Very near fine in publisher's gray wrappers, decorated with an image of the Possum factories, "Perhaps the largest Pure Food Factories in the world." Scarce. [OCLC locates no copies of this printing, and just one copy (Univ. of Kentucky) of a 1914 issue with similar pagination; not in Cagle].

[Boston: Robinson Engraving Co, 1890. Menu, in painted wooden boards, bound with cord (20 x 15.2 cm.), 10 gold-printed leaves, each a die-cut circle printed versos only. An elaborate program of events for the eleventh annual meeting of the Hotel Men's Mutual Benefit Association, held in May, 1890 at Boston's great hotels, the Parker House, Hotel Vendome, and American House. The H.M.M.B.A. was founded in 1879 to offer hotel workers insurance plans; it was later to become the Bankers Life and Casualty Company. The program and menu for the three-day meeting includes the meeting itself, music, speakers, presentations, carriage excursions, etc. The painted wooden boards hold die-cut 'booklets' dedicated to the Convention, headquartered at the Parker House, the Eleventh Annual Banquet, held at the American House, and the Reception, held at the Hotel Vendome.
