1920 ECONOMICS 1st ed KEYNES Consequences of Peace Versailles Conference Germany

"When the final result is expected to be a compromise, it is often prudent to start from an extreme position."
― John Maynard Keynes, The Economic Consequences of the Peace

John Maynard Keynes was a 20th-century British economist most known for his book "The Economic Consequences of the Peace."
"This work was widely acclaimed by the public because it disclosed, to a far greater extent than anything up to that time, the proceedings at the Versailles Conference, where the treaty with Germany was being drafted. Keynes, who attended these meetings as a member of the British Treasure delegation, showed himself to be no meek author, but a brilliant writer who was determined to deliver his message to the world and be heard. The gospel he sought to preach was that the treat was 'an act of wickedness and folly'. (Cammarosano, 70)
Keynes strongly protested the imposition of large reparations on Germany and insisted the terms… Read More

1768 1ed Colonial Americana Almanac Fletcher Massachusetts Bay Charter Plymouth

'Edes & Gill's North American Almanack' was a short-lived 18th-century almanac that covered basic almanac information such as sunrise and sunset times, eclipses, phases of the moon, etc. However, this particular almanac is notable for the inclusion of Pennsylvania Governor Benjamin Fletcher's 1692 commission to English royals William and Mary, one of America's founding charters (Wakelyn), also known as the Massachusetts Bay Charter.
A fascinating piece of pre-Constitution Americana with references to Plymouth, Portsmouth, and Cape Cod in the section on distances between principal American towns.

1841 1ed English Efes Dammim Jerusalem Jewish Zaslav Poland Damascus Affair

'Éfés dammîm. A series of conversations at Jerusalem' was written by the famous Jewish scholar Levinsohn. Levinsohn s work was written in response to the blood accusation charge brought against the Jews of Zaslav in Poland charged with killing Christians to use their blood in communion. Levinsohn's purpose was to acquit the Jews before the eyes of Christians, and to save them from the false accusation of using Christian blood for communion. "Efes Dammim" is written dialogically between a patriarch of the Greek Church in Jerusalem, Simias, and the chief rabbi in the Jewish synagogue.

A 19th-century Sino-Japanese woodblock printing of "Eighteen Histories Outlines" bound in the fukurotoji style. "Eighteen Histories Outlines" (Shiba shilue 十八史略) is a concise general history text created in the Yuan dynasty written by the Song Dynasty scholar Zeng Xianzhi, which achieved widespread popularity in the Ming dynasty. During the Meiji Restoration period, a demand for abbreviated histories arose in Japan leading to large-scale publications of 'Eighteen Histories Outlines' and creating "a profound impact on Japanese society, culture, and historiography, with a legacy extending into the contemporary period." "I intended not only to oblige my friends, but Mine enemies also"
― John Gauden, Eikon Basilike

The autobiography of King Charles I of England was published shortly after he was executed following the English Civil War. Known as 'Eikon Basilike', this diary gives light to the life of the king, as well as prayers, and secrets of the English military that led into the Civil War. While it is not certain that Charles I was the author or not, it is recognized as a work of Royalist propaganda and quite popular, even though it was highly disapproved of.

This 1681 Royston printing features the expected allegorical frontispiece which depicts Charles I as a Christian martyr.

Description:
1794 1ed Menno Simons Mennonite Fundamentals America Anabaptist Pennsylvania

Menno Simons was an important and influential Anabaptist priest who is best known for establishing the Mennonite denomination. Simons departed from the Catholic Church and began writing works which rejected the teachings and practices of Catholicism, none more so than his book 'Foundation of Christian Doctrine'. In it, Simons covers his disagreements with infant baptism, asceticism, and excommunication – all practiced within the Roman Catholic tradition.
This 18th-century first American edition of the works of Menno Simons was published in Pennsylvania, at the heart of the Quaker and Mennonite country in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
