Description:
De Wolfe, Fiske & Co, Boston, 1890. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition. Book Illustrated with Ten Hand-Colored Plates. Charles Johnson Maynard (1845-1929) was an American naturalist and ornithologist who was a native of Newton, Massachusetts. He identified a number of bird sub-species through his field work. A prolific writer in the natural sciences, Maynard published many books, including this one, himself under his publishing company C. J. Maynard & Co., located a Newton. He was an early member of the Nuttall Ornithological Club of Cambridge, the oldest ornithology organization in the United States, although his field work interfered with his duties as Vice President of the club and co-editor of its journal, leading to his removal from those positions and resignation from the club in 1876. The book bears the bookplate of and is signed by Howard Gardner Nichols (1871-1896), who grew up in Newton and was a student at Harvard when he inscribed the book… Read More

Description:
Harcourt Brace, New York, 1920. First Trade Edition. Hardcover. Good+ Condition/No Dust Jacket (as issued). Book First trade printing of what became a standard style book for writers. This was originally prepared by Strunk for use in his classes at Cornell University and, based upon the dates on the copyright page, there were apparently two private printings (1918 and 1919) before this first trade edition. Size: Around 7" or slightly taller - Duodecimo (12mo). 52 pages. Item Type: Book. The text block is tight though toned from age. Six pages have markings in pencil, usually a check mark for a section, but a few instances of examples of sentence construction on two of the pages. Blue paper over boards bound in blue fabric. The title and author are printed in block within a box and there is an HB CO logo on the front cover. The fabric on the spine is brittle and torn almost all the way up the spine, so that the cover is barely hanging on. No foxing in this copy. The previous owner's name… Read More
