THE EARLIEST PRIVATE-LIBRARY CATALOGUE ARRANGED BY SUBJECTSFIRST EDITION. 8vo (ca. 19,5x15,5 cm), [20], 542 pp., Roman and Italic letter. Woodcut initials, large printers device on t-p and Cordes's full-page engraved portrait to verso of a2. Generally, a very pleasant copy, clean and crisp. Very occasional mild waterstaining at blank margins, stronger damp stains to the final 50 leaves. Upper blank corners of the 3 last leaves restored. Bound in contemporary semi-limp vellum, early ms. title to spine. A near-fine, wide-margined and complete copy of an extremely rare and iconic work, preserved in its original binding. The present work "did much to establish the use of catalogues of private libraries as reference works" (Taylor, p. 109; see also p. 238). The Bibliothecae Cordesianae catalogus is perhaps one the earliest major library catalogues to appear in print and surely the first printed catalogue of a French private library arranged by subject. For such reason, it is of greatest relevance for the… Read More

PENNY DREADFUL, SCARCE AND COMPLETERARE FIRST EDITION. 8vo, [2], 286 pp., illustrated with 36 half-page vignettes in the text and 2 full-page plates signed "Pickering", probably J. Early 20th century navy blue buckram binding, gilt title tooled to rounded spine and double gilt fillets decorating spine caps. All edges sprinkled in red. Early provenance stamp to verso of both plates and blank margin of p. 130: "From / Ann Plummer's / news paper office / Theobalds Road / London." Additional imprint statement printed at colophon: "London: Published by E. Lloyd at the office of 'The Penny Sunday Times', 231, Shoreditch." Very light browning throughout (a classic aging issue of the thin low-quality paper used in C19th newspapers), negligible repair to a small tear at gutter of final leaf. An excellent copy.Thomas Peckett Prest (1810 -1859)… Read More

Description:
FIRST EDITION. 12mo, pp. 227, [1], with engraved frontispiece and 4 folding plates. Head and tailpieces, small woodcut on t-p. Marbled endpapers, contemporary mottled leather, gilt decorations to spine, green silk bookmark. Ownership note on t-p: "Du chevalier de Robilant", perhaps Italian engineer Spirito Benedetto Nicolis di Robilant (1724-1801). Some small flaws at spine caps and corners of the boards. A very good copy. A.e.r.Frontispiece engraving by Brunet after Le Sueur, representing an experiment with electricity. Abbé Nollet (1700-1770), who was a pupil of Réaumur and collaborator of du Fay, opened an office in Paris where he performed his experiments "live". The success was unexpected: the whole court thronged there and experimental physics became an amateur's pleasure and a fashionable entertainment to which Nollet contributed doubly since he manufactured and sold the instruments which allowed the beholders to repeat the experiments in their own places.Mottelay, pp. 181-183; Wheeler Gift, 329.

RENAISSANCE BLIND-STAMPED BINDING; COPIOUSLY ANNOTATED IN AN EARLY HAND
8vo, pp. 350 [50]. Italic letter, little Roman. Woodcut printer's device on t-p and final leaf, historiated initials. Early annotations and underlining throughout, especially up to Book XIX. Later ownership autograph on t-p. Blind-stamped ornamental panels on both covers, contemporary calf, spine rebacked and refurbished, endpapers renewed (but not modern), recent C18th-style morocco label with gilt lettering. Author's ms. name written on foot fore-edge. A very good copy.

Dedicatory letter by the editor, German jurist and humanist Johann Sichard, to Peter Reich von Reichenstein, clergyman in Basel. Justin flourished in the third century AD. A Roman historian, he was the author of this Epitome, an abridgement of the Historiae Philippicae et totius mundi origines et terrae situs (Philippic Histories) by Pompeius Trogus, whose work is lost. Most of the abridgement is not so much a summary as passages quoted from Trogus. Nothing is… Read More
