Hanks of Bristol, Virginia, that the Valdez Company would give him a $1000 winning ticket if he could sell $75 worth of tickets to help the company get a foothold in a new community. "All we ask of you is to keep the contents of this letter confidential ... we lose money the first month but the large amount of tickets we will be able to sell afterwards will pay us to send you the prize." Profusely illustrated with seven black and white wood-engraved plates, four large black and white illustrations in text, and five striking folding chromolithograph plates. Original printed green wrappers (foxed). Very good. A scarce catalogue of heavy agricultural machinery with five brilliantly colored folding plates, chromolithographed by Chandler, Indianapolis, depicting the "double canvass separator, Hasselman separator, oscillator thresher, agricultural engine, and the Eagle horse power." Romaine records nothing from this firm. OCLC locates several items from this firm, but nothing before 1883. (1219).

First separate edition, an offprint from ARKANSAS HISTORICAL QUARTERLY, Spring issue, 1952. 8vo. 16 pp. Hunting, fishing, and horse racing around ante-bellum Batesville, Arkansas; Noland (1810-1858) contributed sketches based on his outdoor activities to the "Spirit of the Times." OCLC locates eight copies, all in Arkansas. Creased as for mailing, ink marks in margin of rear wrapper, else very good. Printed self-wrappers (rubbed, some erosion to spine, some old staining), stapled. (2895).

Dated Jan. 22, 1808. One page. Printed bond, filled in in long hand, allowing Luis Lofton, accused of theft & assault & battery, to remain at liberty until his trial. Very good.

Oblong 8vo., color illustrated paperwraps, rubbed and creased, spine and rear wrapper repaired with cello tape. 15 x 23 cm. A-J (introductory text on the photographs, by Frank S. Hastings, Manager of the S.M.S. Ranch), and 157 pp., including over 100 pages of captioned photo illustrations, some by Erwin E. Smith, printed on glossy paper. Front wrapper shows a group of "S.M.S. Standard Calves, Finished in the Corn Belt," rear wrapper depicts the "S.M.S. Pasture," with cattle grazing, and three men on horseback in the foreground. Previous owner's bookplate laid down inside front wrapper, and his signature on first introductory page. A few ink notes on the final blank page. A good copy overall. Inscribed on the half-title by Karpinski in 1942 to Bishop Collins Denny (1854-1943), a Methodist bishop and professor of moral and mental philosophy at Vanderbilt, 1891-1910, dismissed when he "tried to impose theological control over the university."
