First editions and a complete set with all three series; very rare when complete. The five battles of Kawanakajima were fought between Takeda Shingen of Kai Province and Uesugi Kenshin of Echigo Province in the years 1553, 1555, 1557, 1561, and 1564. The battles have been repeatedly celebrated in warrior novels of the Edo period. These novels can be categorized as gokan, popular illustrated stories. Sekkōsai was an artist active in Osaka, ca. 1740-50. He illustrated books and theater programs and also designed a number of prints. This is "the best of Sekkōsai's sumi-printed books, consisting of a wide range of miscellaneous pictures, some in Kanō or even Itchō style. The profile drawing of a girl wearing a kimono patterned with white hares and drooping willow wands is unusually winning."-Hillier, The Art of the Japanese Book, p. 299. A very rare - apparently unrecorded - edition of the complete Lotus Sutra, handsomely carved throughout in hiragana, allowing those unskilled in reading kanji to study the text. The vast majority of sutra printed in early Japan were carved in kanji (kanbun style) or a mixture of kanji and hiragana. NIJL lists only two editions of the Lotus Sutra printed entirely in hiragana: a 1682 edition, which is clearly not our edition, and another, undated, edition held by the Sakamoto Ryumon Bunko of Nara. It was this work that was largely responsible for the introduction of Continental methods of analysis and notation into English mathematics. Herschel, Babbage and Peacock, who formed the Analytical Society while still undergraduates at Cambridge, translated and edited Lacroix's work and secured its use as a textbook, first in Cambridge and afterwards, country-wide.
