Sylvia Plath’s fierce mythology of injury and self-destruction. The casual perfection of Elizabeth Bishop. The ecstatic sprawl of Allen Ginsberg. The 164 selections in “Eight American Poets” include widely anthologized works like Theodore Roethke’s “My Papa’s Waltz,” several of John Berryman’s “Dream Songs,” James Merrill’s “Lost in Translation,” and Anne Sexton’s “Ringing the Bells,” as well as poems that are less familiar but just as haunting.”-publisher
