London: Chatto and Windus, 1909. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 9.25" x 7", xv, 275 pp, with 46 color plates and 16 sepia drawings (all by the author), folding map of China. Bound in original green cloth with lettering and decoration in gilt, top edge gilt. Spine is slightly slanted and spine cloth is lightly sunned, with tears at head and foot. Mild to moderate foxing on some pages, but generally clean and sound. Emily Georgiana Kemp (1860-1939) was a British adventurer, artist and writer who travelled in China, Korea, India, Central Asia and the Amazon. The focus of her books -- which included (among others) The Face of Manchuria, Korea and Russian Turkestan (1910), Wanderings in Chinese Turkestan (1914), and Chinese Mettle (1921) -- was the education and welfare of women.

Very good. 6.5 x 9.75 inches, (ix), 16 pp, in beige printed wrappers with half-tone photo of Yosemite Falls mounted on front cover, accompanied by the original (unposted) mailing envelope. One mild crease affects the volume as a whole, otherwise a very nice copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper "Thoughts from Yosemite -- to you. Frances Osborne-Stallings. This collection of Yosemite-related verse, is dedicated "to the Ranger-Naturalists of our National Parks, and to all who love life." Many of the poems are about specific features--both natural and manmade--of the Park, such as Nevada and Vernal Falls, Half Dome, El Capitan, Glacier Point, the Ahwahnee, Yosemite Lodge, and Camp Curry. A second edition was published in 1940.

Newport, R.I.: James Atkinson, 1840. 8vo, 102 pp, in original sewn wrappers. Very good, with a corner missing from rear wrapper and occasional light foxing. First publication in this form; originally a series of articles published in the Newport newspaper Herald of the Times, written in opposition to Van Buren's economic policies and in support of the Whig Party platform. Hazard (1797-1886) was a Rhode Island textile manufacturer and dedicated social reformer who favord protections for American domestic manufacturing as a solution to unemployment. He later published works on capital punishment and poverty issues. Sabin 31111 (noting that the work "contains many facts relative to the early history of manufactories in Rhode Island"); Bartlett p. 148.
