Dedication "für HANS ARNOLD geschreiben, Weihnachten 1934," signed in ink by Grete Scholz. Text mimeographed typescript on Crown Van Gelder. Bound in half vellum over buckram cloth-covered boards, with buckram endleaves. Title stamped in gilt letters on vellum panel of top board. Upper board somewhat bowed, but book is effectively pristine. The successful German-Jewish banker Hans Arnold made his home in Berlin a salon for artists, musicians, and intellectuals (the structure now houses the American Academy in Berlin). Untrimmed copy in publisher's block-printed decorated wraps, paper title label on spine. Wrapper peeling at spine ends. Early owner's ink stamp on title page. References: De Backer & Sommervogel, VI, 1911, #32; Cf Gamba 2420. One of the bright lights of his generation of Italian writers, the Jesuit Giambattista Roberti first conceived this collection of "Aesopian" verse tales in the early 1770s, and published ever-increasing versions of it until it took its definitive form in 1782, published in the author's home town of Bassano by the great Remondini firm. Giuseppe Remondini writes in the preface to this volume that although there are several extant edtions, "none other can rival boast the breadth and the accuracy of mine, since it has been reviewed with careful diligence by the author himself, and enriched by him with fresh material.

Bound in rustic contemporary vellum over boards, in Latin American style (laced to text block with headband cores), titled in ink on spine, worn, peeling at fore-edge of upper board; scorched (?) on lower board. Old sewing on spine. Title page loose. Damp stain in lower margin of first 20 leaves, affecting title page. Sewing is inexpert, yet holding. Protected in clamshell case. Charming, well-thumbed, American copy of the popular compilation of fables.

This copy of Fiala's account of the Ziegler Polar Expedition (1903-05), inscribed and complete with map, comes with a bonus of the 48-page catalogue issued by the store in 1928, listing rifles and firearms, knives, compasses, lamps, binoculars, and all manner of specialized clothing for hunting.

Includes original wood engraving of "Grouse Mountain in Wintertime" by Vancouver artist George Kuthan. Some slight crimping at bound edge due to inattentive storage. The text first appeared as the foreword to "Wood Engraving," by R. John Beedham, in 1921. It was printed here by the legendary Wil Hudson for the opening of the National Library and Archives Building at the University of British Columbia, and "as a tribute to W. Kaye Lamb, Dominion Archivist and First National Librarian of Canada." The edition is limited to 450 copies.
