Description:
Wilberforce, Ohio, 1926. Very good +. 15 7/8" x 66½". Black and white panoramic photograph. Very good plus: chip to upper right corner not affecting image, a few tiny marginal tears and surface imperfections. This is a mammoth five and a half foot long photo of students and faculty at Wilberforce University, the first college to be owned and operated by African Americans. The crisp image shows several hundred students as well as faculty. Dorothy Vaughan, the NASA mathematician who was featured in the book and movie, Hidden Figures, was attending Wilberforce at the time and we think she can be seen in the photo in the sixth row from the bottom, sixth person in from the left. The photo may also show Milton Wright, the economist who gained fame due to his audience with Adolf Hitler in 1932, and who became Dean of Wilberforce in 1959. We find no other examples via OCLC, Google and auction records searches. This item is offered by Langdon Manor Books, LLC, antiquarian booksellers. We package our…

Description:
New York, N.Y.: William K. Bell Publications, 1956. Very good. 8 1/8" x 5 3/8". Bound, orange thin card wrappers. Pp. xi, 147. Very good: wrappers lightly worn with some dust soiling; faint evidence of water exposure to upper outer corner of around one third of the leaves. Inscribed by the author on the verso of the title page. This is an energetic and informative work offering business advice and encouragement to African Americans. It was written by a Black New York businessman and author, William K. Bell, and inscribed by him as well. The book conveyed various opportunities for financial success, while stressing that the onus of economic betterment was on the African American himself. The author wrote: "Get it out of your head, Mr. Ne*ro, that your own people are going to spend their money with you because you are a Ne*ro. You must offer them for their money the same things and considerations that other people do. It has been found in a good many cases that the biggest enemy to Ne*ro business…

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Howard Harvey, Printer, 1891. Good +. 6½" x 4½". Stapled wrappers. Pp. 39. Good plus: front wrap and first several leaves with insect predation at lower inner corner, not affecting text; some staining to wrappers; clean and lightly toned throughout. This is a report issued by a religious organization that aimed to improve the lives of Chinese American immigrants, the Chinese-American Union of Philadelphia (CAUP). The text provides great insight into CAUP's belief system, informs on its work, and also sheds some light on the reasonably early years of the Chinese population of Philadelphia. According to the Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia online (https://philadelphiaencyclopedia.org/), "Philadelphia's Chinatown had its roots in the "great driving out" of Chinese from the American West in the 1870s and 1880s, when Chinese migrants fled racist backlash and violence. During these decades Chinese merchants and laundry men established a small enclave along the 900…

Description:
Clover, S.C.: [Clover Colored Graded School], 1926. Very good. 8½" x 5½". Two folded bifolia. Pp. [8]. Very good: a few faint creases; lightly toned. This is a rare bulletin issued by the only African American grade school in Clover, South Carolina, after its first year of existence. The bulletin shared the school's principles, information on its finances, and noted the need for improvements, soliciting "the cooperation of all the people of both races." There was also a list of the school's trustees and faculty, as well as a full roster of all enrolled students by grade. The school's principal, Captain Phillip Thomas White, graduated from Shaw University, an HBCU in Raleigh, North Carolina. Before coming to Clover, he had been a professor at Friendship College in Rock Hill, secretary of the fifth congressional district of South Carolina, and a delegate to the National Republican Convention of 1912. He also published The Messenger, the official newspaper for the Black Freemasons within the state.…

Description:
New York, New York, 1941. Good. Items include four pieces of correspondence as well as a sample issue of the magazine made of a 12" x 8 ½" single sheet, folded and printed all four sides. Generally good: sample issue with some old tape at edges and 2¾" x 8½" perforated ordering section excised; letters lightly chipped, toned and soiled. This is a group of promotional materials concerning Negro Youth, a rare African American magazine. Included is a sample issue as well as correspondence mailed to African American HBCU president, M.W. Dogan. Negro Youth is described in detail in item #6. The magazine itself, per OCLC records, is quite rare, with only a few known copies spread among four institutions and it is also found at Danky Hady 4205. The sample issue on offer advertised subscriptions to Negro Youth, which it deemed "a magazine for the Negro family devoted to the training and rearing of its children." Its content is far more mature, however, with question after question posed such as "Why…

Description:
[Los Angeles]: [Lavender World Productions], 1976. Very good. 11" x 8 ½". Broadside printed one side + Fruit of the Loom T-shirt printed both sides. Flyer very good with waviness at bottom; T-shirt very good plus or better. This is a flyer and t-shirt for a reasonably early LGBTQ+ festival that failed spectacularly. The 1st Annual Lavender World's Fair was held April 17th and 18th, 1976 at the L.A. County Fairgrounds at Pomona. It was promoted by Lavender World Productions ("LWP"), an entity which surreptitiously booked the event and disconnected its phone number the day after the fair concluded. Around three months prior to the festival, LWP booked the fairgrounds for Easter weekend for an event it called, "Picnic in the Park." The fairgrounds learned LWP's real plans when a Los Angeles ticket agency reached out asking to confirm that the "Gay World's Fair" would be held there on the specified dates. LWP then admitted the truth to the fairgrounds. In the leadup to the fair, LWP estimated an…

N.P.: N.P., 1922. Very good. 7" x 4¾". Stapled wrappers. Pp. 31 + author frontis. Very good: front wrapper with strip of moderate wear near spine; title page lightly creased; a few lines printed lightly; owner signature to front wrap. This is a fascinating memoir written by an enterprising African man, A. Folumbo I. DeWalt, in an attempt to earn funds for his education in the United States as well as to take care of his ailing mother in Liberia. It details his African upbringing, his acceptance into Howard's School of Dentistry and his aim of returning to Liberia to work as a dentist and missionary. Most of what we learned about the author came from this small book. DeWalt was born in the village of Bensonville near Monrovia, Liberia, the youngest of seven children. The text covered DeWalt's childhood, working his way through mission schools by farming and fishing, and shared a wealth of information about life in Liberia, including native foods and methods of hunting. As he got older, DeWalt…

[London, England]: United Nations Relief & Rehabilitation Administration European Regional Office, 1944. Very good +. 6 3/8" x 4". Stapled thin card wrappers. Pp. iv, 85. Very good plus: minimal wear, lightly toned, prior owner penciled name to front wrap. This is a handbook created by the Displaced Persons Division No. 3 of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) for its staff who were assisting refugees residing and/or working in Germany during World War II. It lays out, with impeccable detail, the myriad challenges faced by foreign laborers at the time. The UNRRA was established in November 1943 to aid victims of war. While the United States was the leading source of funding, support came from 44 nations in total. UNRRA is largely seen as a success, having distributed billions of dollars worth of necessities like food, clothing, shelter and medical care. Its founding agreement related that, "immediately upon the liberation of any area by the armed forces of the…

A striking image of people carrying a cross together and depicting twelve different ethnicities. Baltimore, Maryland: the Corporation, 1915. Very good +. 9" x 6 1/8" Stapled wrappers. pp. 24; 16 + five plates. Very good plus: fresh with minimal wear, light dust soiling to wrappers and offsetting on pages opposite plates. This is the fourth biennial report of the Maryland Workshop for the Blind ("MWB") which was originally established in 1908 by an act of the Maryland legislature and is now known as the Blind Industries and Services of Maryland "BISM." Its mission has not changed in 113 years: to provide vocational rehabilitation, continuous employment and other resources to blind adults of Maryland. There's a short history of how MWB grew out of a small shop that was opened in 1858 at the Maryland School for the Blind ("MSB"). By 1871 the program grew to the point where it needed separate space and in 1874 a house was rented on North Howard Street. That shop was closed in 1878 and for the next 30 years, the only vocational opportunities for adult students at MSB were at off site shops willing…
