First Edition.Hall-Stevenson was a friend of Laurence Sterne, and was immortalized in Sterne's Tristam Shandy and Sentimental Journey Through France and England. Better known were his Fables for Grown Gentlemen. Horace Walpole credited Hall-Stevenson with "a vast deal of original humour and wit."Hall-Stevenson gave some financial support to his friend Sterne, who often visited him at Skelton. They liked to race chariots over the sands at Saltburn. Hall-Stevenson appears under the name of 'Eugenius' in Sterne's novels Tristram Shandy and A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy. The latter was… Read More

Description:
8vo. Original paper boards; paper label on spine. Printed by B. Bensley; Published by the Author; London 1829. "A New Edition." Cobbett had spent his youth in the army, stationed in New Brunswick, where he felt the officers were corrupt and the soldiers underpaid and mistreated. He published The Soldier's Friend in 1792, complaining on these grievances, which caused him to fear reprisal, and so he fled to France. Unfortunately, he arrived at the height of the French Revolution, so his plan to learn French more thoroughly was sidetracked as he continued on to the United States. Once there he found employment teaching English to French exiles, learning their language in the process, resulting in his French Grammar.Board corners and edges are bumped a bit, with some staining; leaves are clean and amply margined; uncut; with the last leaves of quire K unopened, and with some mild foxing and occasional mild toning; o/w Very Nice.
