Description:
New York: Random House, 1954. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. Number 825 of a thousand copies of the signed limited edition. A Near Fine copy of the book with a long gift inscription on the front end paper and the spine a bit faded. With the original publisher's Near Fine slipcase and the tissue dust wrapper that is Very Good, with several chips along the edges. Winner of both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1955, the author considered this work his masterpiece. The novel that Faulkner called "the best work of my life and maybe of my time." After over a decade of work on A Fable, he created one of the most dense and complex novels of his career. "The novel won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award in 1955. An allegorical story of World War I, set in the trenches of France and dealing ostensibly with a mutiny in a French regiment, it was originally considered a sharp departure for Faulkner. Recently it has come to be recognized as one of his major works...His… Read More

Description:
Paris: Garnier Freres, 1854. Early printing of this illustrated edition, first published in 1838-40. Large octavo (10 1/2 x 7 inches; 266 x 178 mm.). Publisher's quarter green morocco over green pebbled cloth over boards. Covers ruled in blind, spine with four raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, watered silk paper end-leaves, all edges gilt. Collating [4], xxiv, 598, [1, epitaph], [3, blank]. Inserted engraved frontispiece and 240 engraved illustrations of the fables as well as numerous engraved head and tail pieces. A Near Fine copy. "In these designs, the most popular he ever drew, Grandville presents La Fontaine's beasts acting like men and sometimes costumed like them. Since La Fontaine's poems are a veiled commentary on human behavior, this formula works to admiration. Even Oudry's drawings do not always match Grandville's in psychological penetration, however superior they may be in other respects. Grandville is effective as well with uncostumed animals,… Read More

Santa Barbara: Black Sparrow Press, 1975. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. One of 750 first trade editions. A nearly Fine copy in Near Fine publisher's acetate jacket. Bound in light green boards with black cloth backstrip and maintaining paper title to spine; with geometric design on front cover. Exceptionally minor wear to extremities (including a loose string from cloth backstrip); jacket with expected scuffing and a few small bumps. Otherwise a clean copy appearing unread. Bukowski's second Henry Chinaski novel, and the prequel to Post Office (although published after), follow's the author's alter ego as he moves from job to job while pursuing his writing and wrestling with his demons. The book would later be adapted into film (2005). A great example of a Black Sparrow Press book. Run by John Martin the avant-garde press was responsible for supporting and publishing Bukowski's work throughout his prolific career. Krumhansl 51. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1910. First 're-issue' edition. First published 1907). Publisher's deep blue cloth, front cover pictorially stamped in gilt, spine lettered in gilt. Early ink inscription on front free endpaper. Octavo (7 5/8 x 6 inches; 194 x 153 mm). 117, [1, blank], [1, printer's slug], [1, blank] pp. Eight color plates printed on glossy paper with captions printed in blue. A fine copy. "Fairies I Have Met was reviewed in Outlook in its Literary Supplement of New Children's Books, November 9, 1907. The reviewer spoke of the book as 'charmingly illustrated in colour by Edmund Dulac.' It would be hard to disagree... With the pictures here, Dulac displays a style much more humorous and whimsical than that of his illustrations for the Bronte novels two years earlier. The subjects are painted at close range, in deep colours, creating bolder designs and showing much detail, as opposed to the distant misty room or landscape scenery of the Bronte work" (Hughey). Paris: [Imprimerie de Schneider et Langrand], 1843. First edition. Contemporary 19th century quarter calf binding with green boards; gentle wear to edges. Internally an excellent copy with original wraps bound in; occasional light foxing and small paper loss to margins of last two leaves, neither affecting text. Octavo collates complete with 31 pages. An exceptionally rare copy of Sand's first work on social justice, of which only 500 were printed. This copy is the only one known to have come onto the market, with none in the modern auction records and the only other held at La Bibliotheque Nationale de France. Having dedicated the first decade of her career toward writing novels about women's internal and social struggles, George Sand made her first move into activism with Fanchette. Shocked by the story of a young girl with mental illness, who had been refused refuge in a convent and was soon after discovered pregnant and arrested for begging, Sand opted to expose the events in a set of letters… Read More

Description:
New York: Leypoldt & Holt, 1867. First English language edition. Very Good. Translated from the Russian by Eugene Schuyler. This copy Very Good or a little better with blue boards mottled and small loss to the cloth at the lower spine. Internally the book is tight, with uncracked hinges and page block, pencil bookseller notations on end papers and light to moderate foxing throughout, as is common. Originally published in Russia in 1862, this book remains the author's most important literary contribution. It tracks the growing divide between generations of Russians who adopt western theories first of liberalism then nihilism. As with many other works of this period, it also follows the emotional growth and love interests of parallel characters. Its influence can be felt in later works by Tolstoy and Dostoevsky as well as numerous western authors. Along with Gogol's "Dead Souls," this work is considered one of the earliest modern Russian novels. Very Good.

Description:
London: Boosey & Sons, 1821. First English language edition. First appearance of this controversial translation, over which translation attribution is still debated. Bound in twentieth century full calf with gilt to spine, measuring 279 x 226mm. Bound without half title, otherwise collating complete including frontis and 26 plates (27 plates in all): viii, 86, [2]. A Very Good+ to Near Fine copy with minimal scuffing and wear to corners. Typical light scattered foxing throughout. Small bookbinder's ticket to front pastedown; discreet library ticket to rear pastedown "From the Collection of David & Patricia Corey" (library auctioned 30 May 2018 in Norfolk). In all, an extremely pleasing example of this classic narrative of temptation. Considered the first substantial translation into English of Goethe's work, controversy still exists over who deserves credit for it. Though Coleridge had begun a translation for John Murray in 1814, he declared that it was never completed. "In 1820, when demand was… Read More

New York: Wm. C. Bryant & Co Printers, 1863. First edition. Very Good +. Original paper wraps. 23 pages. Number 10 in a series of 17 pamphlets addressing the causes and outcomes of the Civil War. One of two variant printings with no priority assigned, this with page 23 beginning "attempt at corrupting." Some separation to the foot of spine, with text block holding well. While at its release, A Few Words was anonymous, an 1865 publication by the Loyal Publication Society attributes the work to Caroline Kirkland (Mrs. C. M. Kirkland). Kirkland, a writer, educator, and abolitionist, brought a unique perspective to the debate on women's roles in the Civil War. Description:
Seattle: Mill Mountain Press, 1975. First Edition. Fine. Tall trade paperbound volume of poems by the cult poet hero, Frank Stanford. Drawings by Ginny Crouch Stanford. 30 pages. A sharp, Fine copy in simple bound blue wrappers, lettered in red. The author's fourth collection and one of the more elusive books in his all too brief career. Considered an example of his maturing voice, Field Talk "dealt with tension between the narrative and the lyric, between the allegorical and the personal...by the time he reached his peak with Field Talk, he combined the two impulses into a unified voice" (Howell). The poems in field talk range from one and two ling impressionistic pieces "I hold the knife underwater / the boats come by" to longer pieces that seem to draw from Stanford's mysterious adventures. Fine.
