One of 20 copies signed by the duo, John Held, Jr. and Picasso Gaglione. This publication documents their performance at the Musée de la Poste and subsequent journey through Northern Europe meeting with important figures in the mail art network, including Daniel Daligand, Guy Bleus, Rod Summers, and Ruud Janssen. Held provides a travel diary of their trip while Gaglione was responsible for collecting stamp impressions from the artists they met, all of which are reproduced by photocopier herein. In excellent condition and complete with the linoleum stamp on the upper cover. Signed on the title-page by the duo. We find three examples in North America.

This work, Fang guang bo re bo luo mi jing, "is not a direct translation from the original Sanskrit text, but an abridged translation" (Digital Dictionary of Buddhism), by the Khotanese monk Mokṣala 無叉羅 and the Indian monk Zhu-shu-lan 竺叔蘭, carried out in 291 CE under the Western Jin 晉 dynasty. The Sanskrit original of the sutra had been acquired by the Chinese monk Zhu Shixing 朱士行, who travelled to Kustana (Khotan) on a pilgrimage in 260 CE. [China]: Privately Published, 1870 & 1872. First editions, and fine copies, of these beautifully illustrated accounts of the author's archeological visits to the Qing imperial tombs. These two books were privately published by the author and are uncommon to find together and in nice condition. The prefaces to both works are printed in clerical-script calligraphy, and both works contain maps of the tomb complexes and surrounding geographical features. Separate maps show the waterways of the two regions. The author, Dong Xun 董恂 (1807-92), was a high Qing official and writer. Originally from Jiangsu in the lower-Yangzi region, Dong served in both the central government and in provincial positions. This copy belonged to Benedict Nicolson (1914-78), a prominent art historian. Locker-Lampson (1875-1946), an MP and author, formed a highly selective collection of Italian paintings. They include Pietro Longhi's Visit to a Library, Vivarini's St. Jerome (National Gallery of Art, Washington), and Bacchiacca's Eve with Cain and Abel (Metropolitan Museum of Art). The works were eventually dispersed in 1938. It is likely that this catalogue was prepared as a record of the collection before its contents were auctioned off. Very good copy. The extremely rare printed program for the inauguration of the first public synagogue in Munich on 21 April 1826. The impressive neoclassical building on the Westenriederstrasse was designed and erected by Jean Baptiste Métivier for the small but important Munich community of court Jews and state suppliers founded in 1815. The project was supported by King Max I Joseph of Bavaria, and his successor Ludwig I attended the ceremony with his wife and members of the nobility. Contemporary journals praised the festive character of the event. The inauguration speech was given by Hirsch Aub who became rabbi of the new synagogue through more than four decades. The director of the royal chapel and opera, Joseph Hartmann Stunz, and the royal intendant Johann Nepomuk von Poissl set prayers, psalms and a long hymn to music. Almack's library was particularly rich in 17th-century English books and MSS., with many splendid Samuel Mearne bindings. Some of the colored illustrations are heightened in gold. Japan: late Edo. Until the late 17th century, the Chinese had been permitted to move in Japan quite freely for trading purposes. But in 1689, due to the rise of smuggling activities, the Chinese were restricted, like the Dutch, to a compound on the eastern tip of Nagasaki - called the "Tojin yashiki" ("Chinamen's mansions") - surrounded by a moat and walls with gates which could be locked from the outside. Inside were housed on average 2000 Chinese merchants and sailors, along with interpreters, inspectors, and staff. This scroll depicts two large Chinese ships just off Nagasaki surrounded by a number of smaller transport and supply ships. It is clear that these smaller ships are Japanese based on the clothes the crewmen are wearing. The numerous Japanese government officials are dressed in black robes; they are inspecting the arriving goods (sugar, raw silk, and finished fabrics) along with antiques. Morning glories, first brought into Japan by the Chinese, were originally used for medicinal purposes, as a laxative. But soon the Japanese cultivated them as ornamental flowers. During the Edo period, morning glories became very popular and the subject of aesthetic admiration. Much like the "tulip mania" in 17th-century Holland, Japan experienced several morning glory booms in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Japanese horticulturalists have been the leaders in cross-breeding the flowers to develop new varieties. The anonymous artist who executed the skilled drawings in this album has depicted many varieties of the morning glory flower in great detail, painted in rich colors. I visited Banjin in 1737 and had conversations with him, [signed] Soko." Manuscript excerpts dating from after 1646, taken from Shuo fu 說郛, a collectanea (congshu 叢書) by Tao Zongyi 陶宗儀 (ca. 1316-ca. 1402), bibliophile and author; Shuo fu preserved a number of important documents and biographical data that would have been lost otherwise. Tao included a number of works - now unique - on Inner Asian dynasties and Southeast Asian kingdoms. The title Shuo fu is rarely translated but comes from a phrase meaning "Heaven and earth form the castle walls of the myriad things; the Five Classics are the outer city walls (fu) of the numerous accounts (shuo)." The Taiheiki [Chronicle of Great Peace] is a historical epic written in the late 14th century that covers the period of war within Japan from 1319 to 1367 between the Northern and Southern courts. It is part of the genre known as gunki or kassen monogatari, tales of epic wars between two parties. A popular story, it was recycled and re-worked in later centuries, mostly as a parody of current events and problems or as a basis for fictional stories.
