The Sanskrit original of the sutra had been acquired by the Chinese monk Zhu Shixing 朱士行, who travelled to Kustana (Khotan) on a pilgrimage in 260 CE. Description:
Single sheet exhibition invitation torn into ca. two dozen pieces. Amsterdam: Pieter Brattinga Gallery, 1981.

One of Ulises Carrión's rarest mail art projects, with the original mailed envelope sent to the collector Tjeerd Deelstra (b. 1937). As the artist intended (explained below), a small torn portion is not present.

"In 1981, when the Print Gallery Pieter Brattinga invited Carrión to exhibit his work there, Carrión thought of a response project in which he instructed participants to reconstruct, in any way they desired, the bottom half of an invitation, which had been shredded. They were then to sign it and mail it back to the gallery. The lower section of the invitation included a definition of mail art, which the artist had torn up and from which he had then removed a small fragment. This way, the definition of mail art could never be reconstructed and the instruction given by the artist was impossible to… Read More

Frontis. & 19 photographic plates. 47 pp. Large 4to, orig. blue cloth (extremities rubbed), upper cover lettered in gilt. [London: Privately Printed at the Chiswick Press, c. 1937]. This copy belonged to Benedict Nicolson (1914-78), a prominent art historian. Locker-Lampson (1875-1946), an MP and author, formed a highly selective collection of Italian paintings. They include Pietro Longhi's Visit to a Library, Vivarini's St. Jerome (National Gallery of Art, Washington), and Bacchiacca's Eve with Cain and Abel (Metropolitan Museum of Art). The works were eventually dispersed in 1938. It is likely that this catalogue was prepared as a record of the collection before its contents were auctioned off. Very good copy. Description:
Printing in Hebrew. 23 pages. Small 4to, orig. blue boards, gilt border round sides, contrasting pink endpapers, a.e.g. Munich: C. Wolf, [1826]. The extremely rare printed program for the inauguration of the first public synagogue in Munich on 21 April 1826. The impressive neoclassical building on the Westenriederstrasse was designed and erected by Jean Baptiste Métivier for the small but important Munich community of court Jews and state suppliers founded in 1815. The project was supported by King Max I Joseph of Bavaria, and his successor Ludwig I attended the ceremony with his wife and members of the nobility. Contemporary journals praised the festive character of the event. The inauguration speech was given by Hirsch Aub who became rabbi of the new synagogue through more than four decades. The director of the royal chapel and opera, Joseph Hartmann Stunz, and the royal intendant Johann Nepomuk von Poissl set prayers, psalms and a long hymn to music. The instrumental parts were… Read More

Description:
Japan: late Edo. Until the late 17th century, the Chinese had been permitted to move in Japan quite freely for trading purposes. But in 1689, due to the rise of smuggling activities, the Chinese were restricted, like the Dutch, to a compound on the eastern tip of Nagasaki - called the "Tojin yashiki" ("Chinamen's mansions") - surrounded by a moat and walls with gates which could be locked from the outside. Inside were housed on average 2000 Chinese merchants and sailors, along with interpreters, inspectors, and staff. This scroll depicts two large Chinese ships just off Nagasaki surrounded by a number of smaller transport and supply ships. It is clear that these smaller ships are Japanese based on the clothes the crewmen are wearing. The numerous Japanese government officials are dressed in black robes; they are inspecting the arriving goods (sugar, raw silk, and finished fabrics) along with antiques. The final section of the scroll depicts a portion of Tojin yashiki. We see the arriving transport… Read More

Description:
15 folding leaves. 8vo (290 x 2000 mm.), orig. yellow semi-stiff wrappers (wrappers a little soiled), new stitching. [Japan: late Edo]. Morning glories, first brought into Japan by the Chinese, were originally used for medicinal purposes, as a laxative. But soon the Japanese cultivated them as ornamental flowers. During the Edo period, morning glories became very popular and the subject of aesthetic admiration. Much like the "tulip mania" in 17th-century Holland, Japan experienced several morning glory booms in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Japanese horticulturalists have been the leaders in cross-breeding the flowers to develop new varieties. The anonymous artist who executed the skilled drawings in this album has depicted many varieties of the morning glory flower in great detail, painted in rich colors. The artist has labelled each flower with its name (and alternate names) and a brief description. The artist has frequently used ground-shell white pigment to give the paintings a… Read More

Brush & ink drawings in several vols. Ca. 1500 folding leaves. Ten vols. Thick 8vo (280 x 195 mm.), later wrappers, new stitching. [Japan]: from the final leaf of Vol. 10 (in approximate trans.): "The Buddhist practitioner Banjin copied this in Kinko [in today's Kagoshima Prefecture] in 1721. I visited Banjin in 1737 and had conversations with him, [signed] Soko." Manuscript excerpts dating from after 1646, taken from Shuo fu 說郛, a collectanea (congshu 叢書) by Tao Zongyi 陶宗儀 (ca. 1316-ca. 1402), bibliophile and author; Shuo fu preserved a number of important documents and biographical data that would have been lost otherwise. Tao included a number of works - now unique - on Inner Asian dynasties and Southeast Asian kingdoms. The title Shuo fu is rarely translated but comes from a phrase meaning "Heaven and earth form the castle walls of the myriad things; the Five Classics are the outer city walls (fu) of the numerous accounts (shuo)." Five double-page & three full-page woodcuts. 35 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block-printed title label on upper wrapper, new stitching. [Japan: 1681]. The Taiheiki [Chronicle of Great Peace] is a historical epic written in the late 14th century that covers the period of war within Japan from 1319 to 1367 between the Northern and Southern courts. It is part of the genre known as gunki or kassen monogatari, tales of epic wars between two parties. A popular story, it was recycled and re-worked in later centuries, mostly as a parody of current events and problems or as a basis for fictional stories. Some of these parodies include tales about plants or animals, including Shojin gyorui monogatari [Tale of Vegetables and Fish], ca. 1425; Aro kassen monogatari [Tale of the Battle of Heron and Crow], perhaps before 1556; Sumizome no sakura [Cherry in Nun's Robe; also called Plant Chronicle of Peace], 1653; and Uo Taiheiki [Fish Chronicle of Peace].
