Mimeograph style buyers guide for Chicago meat purveyors, featuring a cover image of the gateway of the Union Stockyards. Includes a TLS from the company's president, the customer-is-always-right-statement, advertisements for "Cook-In-Bag Roast", and product list for beef, veal, lamb, pork, poultry, sausage, smoked meats, and entrees. In printed beige wrapper with minor edgewear, stain to front and slight warping, else very good.

"A single big volume that gives you the scope and contents of a whole shelf full of garden books." In green cloth, blind- and gilt-titled. A bit of wear to the extremities. In an unclipped dust jacket; 1/2 inch chip to the foot of the spine, some edgewear. Near very good.

An overview of the physical elements of the garden, including summer houses, pergolas, trellises, bowers, sun dials, gazing globes, bird houses, bee skeps, fountains, walls, terraces, etc. Underwood was a respected nature photographer, and son of William Underwood of the eponymous canned food company. Frontispiece tissue guard lightly foxed. In attractive publisher's decorated green cloth, gilt-titled and decorated with an image of a pergola and fountain, in white and green. Overall very good.

A major study of the gasteromycetes, a class of fungi including over seven hundred species commonly known as "puff balls". The authors were both botanists at the University of North Carolina, and William Coker left his magnificent collection of mushroom books to the Rare Book Collection at UNC where, together with the collection donated by Phil Hanes, it remains one of the most important mycology collections in the world. Tiny it of foxing to edges; some wear to the burgundy cloth. Otherwise very good or better. [Volbracht 391].

The cocktail section contains sixty-two recipes, with drink titles in English (and a few in French). The second issue, dedicated to tobacco and liquor advertising, of the pioneering German graphic design magazine. Contains illustrations of hundreds of tobacco and spirits labels, many full color, plus plates with tipped-in original labels. A bit of offsetting from the thick stock backing of the plates; some creasing and edge wear to wrappers, otherwise very good.

A handwritten and likely professional translation of the original American publication of Frozen Dainties as Made with the White Mountain freezer from Recipes by Mrs. Lincoln [the title page is translated in full] (White Mountain Freezer, 1898). With fifty recipes for ice cream, sorbet, etc. as well as descriptions of the maker, a price list, comments etc. The two clipped illustrations are a view of the "Improved" White Mountain Freezer, and a detailed image of Repairs for the White Mountain Freezer, depicting twenty-seven replacement parts. One wonders if the translation was intended to accompany the release of White Mountain Freezer's popular ice-cream maker? There were two Gentleman's Companions compiled by Charles Baker, the journalist, traveler and collector of food and drink lore. Each Companion was a set of two volumes. This is the first set, a collection of "exotic" culinary and cocktail recipes. The later, second set was focused on South American food and drink. The Washington Post said, "with whimsicality and an extraordinary fidelity to detail, Mr. Charles H. Baker Jr. has done The Gentleman's Companion, a two-volume work on fine drinking and eating. Years of world-wide research are in these splendid books with the strong implication that Mr. Baker's liver never let him down." Baker's writings on exotic cocktails recipes are second to none. Compendium of popular folk remedies compiled by Heinen from various sources. "The author in his preface states that the book is written in non -technical language for the German farmer and ruralist... the book contains more than one hundred headings, listing various illnesses, giving their symptoms, causes, and treatment, with remedies; illnesses common to women and children are grouped in the latter portion of the book" (Brendle & Unger). Some stains throughout; damp stain to top left corner of leaves. A few small chips to leaf edges. In full, dark brown calf; spine gilt-compartmented with ornaments in each. Bill for Mrs. Frank Rollins who purchased gas range, oven, and one gallon gasoline. Some discoloration to verso, otherwise very good.

Philadelphia: Giunta Brothers Manufacturing Co, 1900. Oblong stapled catalogue, 23 x 30.7 cm, 23 pages. Text in English and Italian. Heavily illustrated with photographs and drawings. Features typical Italian culinary wares: wine presses, pasta makers, coffee grinders, ice cream freezers, pizzelle irons, and more. "All items manufactured [...] are covered by patents." In printed yellow wrappers with chipped corners and tide marks, otherwise near very good. [OCLC locates one copy at University of Michigan's Clements Library; not in Romaine].

New York: Alfred Knopf, 1929. Small octavo, 203 pages + 4 ads. First edition. A delightful survey of the history of oysters, along with an anthology of oyster appearances in literary and historical quotation, and a small selection of fine recipes. Bolitho was a prolific author, penning 59 non-fiction works of mostly biography. Royalty was his specialty, as for many years he lived at Windsor Castle, and it was while at Windsor that he wrote this timeless little study of the oyster, his sole culinary work. A bit of light foxing to the first few pages including the title page, otherwise fine, in fine gray cloth with paper covered boards. In the very scarce dust jacket, which is age-toned and has a few edge chips at the head and foot of spine, and some panel separation, but is miraculously, near whole. This is the first time we've seen this in a jacket. A lovely book.
