Description:
Globe near Durham Yard in the Strand: J Boydell, 1750. No Binding. Very Good. BOYDELL John 1720-1804. Oblong, hand coloured engraving of the Gaunant Mawr waterfall near Snowden and close to Dolbadarn Castle in Caernarvonshire. The engraving, originally costing 1s 6d, measures 465*313 mm, & with borders 492*355 mm, is card mounted, and is inhabited by 6 humans and 2 herds of goats, 2 small closed marginal tears. Number 60 of Boydell's One Hundred Views in England and Wales which was published in 1770. Boydell was the most important single print publisher during the period in which British art rose to European prominence. Moreover, his shrewd selection of paintings for publication and of fine young engravers to interpret them produced, especially in the 1760s and 1770s, some of the most distinguished (and profitable) copperplates to be crafted in Britain. No print publisher before or since has ever exerted as much influence on the course of British art. See ODNB. Boydell was the most… Read More
