Illustrated bifolium program (11" by 8") for a performance given by Albert Gale and his wife Martha Brockway Gale, "Music and Myth of Old Japan". The Gales were two Americans who toured the United States giving "Gale Costume Lectures" with the intent of sharing Japanese art, costume, and performance with the Western world. The program was designed by Albert, and advertises the performance as "A Glimpse of the Queer and Quaint Customs of the 'Little Brown People'" (front); he describes himself on the back as an "Ethnologist of Music" with interests in "the relationships of seemingly diversified primitive peoples". This historical race game has 158 playing spaces numbered in a clockwise direction. They represent events and characters in English history from William I to George III. The game was devised specifically for the education of young children The hand-colored engraved sheet is mounted on linen, folded into twelve sections. A game of goose format with circular images representing either portraits of the principal personages who have signalized themselves as kings, statesmen, churchmen, generals, poets, etc. or some remarkable occurrence in our country concluding with war with America and Treasury. Highlights include three bound gatherings of typewritten meeting programs with lists of members and officers, as well as a handwritten copy of the constitution of the Ta-Ta Pocheon Camp Fire Group of Lovilia, Iowa. The items are: Manuscript notes written in ink on blank printed "Report of Absences" form, 1920s. Lists ideas for Camp Fire Girls activities such as hikes and loaning books to members. Measures 8.5" by 5.5". Toned, a couple short tears. Printed folding application, 1920s, for Guardian Appointment and Camp Fire Charter with 8 pp. of organization information (including dues) and a questionnaire for the prospective applicant. Vincennes, Indiana: Cushman Drug Company, 1900. Very good; some toning, short tears.. Printed flyer (10.75" by 3.75") advertising Cushman's Menthol Inhaler, with list of afflictions its treats (including headache, catarrh, Hay Fever, asthma, toothaches, seasickness, and even "Insomnia and Nervousness") and directions for use "by the Nose" and "by the Mouth". Interestingly, the verso is printed in the German language with Fraktur type, perhaps due to the large number of German-Americans living in Vincennes, Indiana at the time.

Cincinnati, OH: The Alpha Medical Institute, 1900. General wear due to age. Letter folds. A brochure advertising several medical instruments made by the Alpha Medical Institute in Cincinnati, OH, which was run by Dr. Thomas William Graydon (1850-1900). While the instruments could be used to treat any cough, they were designed for consumption, or tuberculosis patients. The three (3) devices advertised in this brochure are: Dr. Graydon's Direct Nasal Appliance, Dr. Graydon's Direct Inhaler, and Dr. Graydon's Improved Compound Inhaler. Instructions for use and an illustration are provided for each device. The Alpha Medical Institute was a financial success, even after Graydon's death in 1900, however in 1905, it was exposed as a fraud by Samuel Hopkins Adams (1871-1958), in a series of articles he wrote in Colliers, which were later complied into a book in 1912 entitled "The Great American Fraud: Articles on the Nostrum Evil and Quackery". 152 Nassau St. cor. of Spruce N.Y.: Lith. & pub. by N. Currier, 1849. Light to moderate wear. with some light margin toning.. A 13 1/3" x 9" hand colored lithograph depicting a portrait of Tom Thumb standing on a somewhat regal looking chair, with his hands on his hips. The image is surrounded by 13 vignettes of Thumb appearing in various roles from Cupid to Sampson and Hercules. It is captioned "General Tom Thumb, Born in 1837 - 31 Inches and weights, only 25 Pounds from a Daguerreotype by Plumbe. A footer at base reads HAVING BEEN CONNECTED FOR 12 YEARS WITH P.T. BARNUM ESQ. IS NOW TRAVELLING FOR THE SOLE BENEFIT OF HIMSELF. Reverse is blank. The footer at base was obviously a publicity stunt as Tom Thumb remained in Barnum for most of his life. That said Tom Thumb (Charles S. Stratton) was a world renown performer.

Washington, D.C.: Union Congressional Committee, 1864. Good. Toned, short tears, chipping, dust soiling.. A fiery political pamphlet published by the Union Congressional Committee, penned to discourage other Northerners from supporting George Hunt Pendleton's (ultimately unsuccessful) bid for Vice President. Pendleton had emerged by 1864 as a leader in the "Copperhead" faction of congress, otherwise known as the "Peace Democrats", so named for their push for peace with the South. The present pamphlet argues that this push for peace was, in practice, a boon to the South. Single vol. (9.5" by 6"), pp. 8, unbound.

The catalogue offers not only the sale of instruments, but the accessories and necessities in order to care for a variety of types. There is brief instructions for care of woodwind instruments. Following is a wide variety of woodwinds, from different types of Cabart oboes, to piccolos, to English horns. Short narrative descriptions with the various styles are offered, along with their price. Then there are accessories for almost all instrument types, from mouthpieces, to violin cases, to music stands, and tuning forks. Followed by a section on the "Southern Defender of Negro Education". Also includes histories, facts and arguments presented by a high school debater in 1902. Background information on the Tuskegee School, Peabody Fund, Slater Fund, General Education Board, Population statistics by state. A portion of the presenter's arguments was " The federal government has also subsidized the Indian for his education; but in this attempt it also did not succeed for while there are a few bright Indians the majority are densely ignorant. Now if the federal government has failed in these two and in the case of the Western reserve found it would be no more successful in the education of the negro than it has been in the education of the Indian.": Presented in hardcover leather copybook. Germany, 1878. Good to very good. Short tears to wrappers, folding leaf. Toned, minor dust soiling and general wear.. A German pattern book with ten (10) cross stitch patterns, including alphabets and decorative borders for samplers or household items such as handkerchiefs or napkins. Housed in the original illustrated wrapper, which includes the German title ("Neuestes Stick-Album") and also translates the English title ("Embroidery-Pattern Book") into French and Spanish. Lower wrapper includes a charming illustration of a little gnome attempting to cross-stitch using the pattern book. Five-panel folding leaf printed in red and blue, housed in original illustrated green wrappers. Measures 3.75" by 5.5" closed.

Hamburg, Germany: Muhlmeister & Johler, 1930. Linen mounted with light edge fray. There is a crease mark where the poster had been folded in half before it was mounted on linen. Otherwise in excellent condition. A political poster for Deutschen Volkspartei (DVP), otherwise known as the German People's Party, a German political party that was the successor to the National Liberal Party. DVP was founded in 1918 and was a "right-wing liberal" party. It was eventually dissolved in 1933 due to rise of the Nazi Party. The poster was aimed at the craftsmen and soldiers of Germany, and features an image of four men, in blue, walking. Mounted on linen. In German. Measures 29" x 18 1/2

Each card within the suit has four (4) relevant names e.g. The first set is dances and the names are fox trot, waltz, rumba and jitterbug and are repeated on each card although the order changes. German-Hanoverian Party (GHP) was a conservative, federalist German political party of the early 1900s. It, like mainly other parties were disbanded in 1933 as the Nazi Party came into power. This poster showcases an image of a young man on a white jumping horse holding a yellow-silver split flag. This image is in front of a red circular background and has the phrase "Im Innen Frei Dem Reichetreu" on it, which roughly translates to "Freely Inside, Faithful to the Realm". Underneath that image is additional text which states, "Demokratie und freies Hannover!" ("emcracy and a Free Hannover!) which refers to the province of Hanover, a part of the Kingdom of Prussia. A printed copy of the sermon, "Get on the Water Wagon" by Rev. William Ashley Sunday (1862-1935). Perhaps better known as Billy Sunday, he was an American baseball player, who played as an outfielder in the National League, who later became one of the most celebrated American Evangelists of the late 20th century. "Get on the Water Wagon" was Sunday's most famous sermon, and as such he preached it on countless occasions. The sermon was about temperance, a movement of which Sunday was a most ardent champion of.
