London: Profile Books, 2013. 1st Edition 2nd Printing. Soft cover. Very Good. First paperback edition, second printing. 20 × 13cm, 534pp. Signed and dedicated by Peter Hart to the title page, to Anne Powell, historian, anthologist and author on the First and Second World Wars. One of the most famous battles in history, Gallipoli forced Churchill from office, established Turkey's iconic founder Mustafa Kemal ('Ataturk') and marked Australia's emergence as a nation in its own right. It had begun as a bold move led by the British to ultimately capture Constantinople, but this definitive new history explains that from the initial landings - which ended with so much blood in the sea it could be seen from aircraft overhead - to the desperate attacks of early summer and the battle of attrition that followed, it was a lunacy that was never going to succeed. Drawing on unpublished personal accounts by individuals at all levels and from all sides - not only from Britain, Australia and… Read More

Hardback in dustwrapper. 24 × 16cm, 329pp. Signed and dedicated by Hilary Rose and Steven Rose to the title page. Our fates lie in our genes and not in the stars, said James Watson, codiscoverer of the structure of DNA. But Watson could not have predicted the scale of the industry now dedicated to this new frontier. Since the launch of the multibillion-dollar Human Genome Project, the biosciences have promised miracle cures and radical new ways of understanding who we are. But where is the new world we were promised? In Genes, Cells, and Brains, feminist sociologist Hilary Rose and neuroscientist Steven Rose take on the bioscience industry and its claims. Examining the rivalries between public and private sequencers, the establishment of biobanks, and the rise of stem cell research, they ask why the promised cornucopia of health benefits has failed to emerge. Has bioethics simply become an… Read More

Lewes: The Book Guild, 2004. First Edition. . Hardback. Very Good/Very Good. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 24 × 16.5cm, 132pp. Signed and dedicated by Oliver Eade to the ffep. Edward Eade was part of the remarkable generation of British artists who reached the public gaze during the 1930's. Trained at the Slade School of Art and later at the Royal Academy Schools, Eade was a painter whose sensitive use of colour was grounded in his superb skill at drawing. After the Second World War he turned to sculpture, studying for a time with Henry Moore. Edward Eade's work remains completely unknown because it was never exhibited during his lifetime. The author of this monograph, the artist's son Oliver, puts this down to his father's "very profound lack of self-confidence," a quality which seems not to have affected the range and ambition of Edward Eade's artistic output. The Gentle Artist includes more than 80 mostly colour examples of Eade's… Read More

Boston: Gambit, 1970. First US Edition. . Hardback. Good/Good. First US edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 21.5 × 14.5cm, 247pp. The author's first novel. From the dustwrapper, "David Plante's first novel explores the relationship between four brothers and a sister: young, cultivated, moderately well-to-do, and haunted by their individual failures to come to grips with the 'outside' world. Drifting between Boston, London, New York and Rome, between abortive love affairs and half-spent passions, they are never quite able to banish the terrible sense of illusion that pervades their lives - except perhaps when they are in their own company. When one of the brothers suddenly dies, his death creates a strangely alluring void, into which they seem to be inexorably drawn." Condition: Good condition. Cape Town: Oxford University Press, 1982. First Edition. . Hardback. Very Good/Good. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 21.5 × 14cm, 131pp. From the dustwrapper, "This study attempts to trace the origin and development of the traditional Xhosa concepts of the supreme being in order to demonstrate the dynamics of the process of religion change. The scene is set with a brief resume of Xhosa history and society to illustrate the disturbance of their socio-cultural experience and, more especially, how interaction with the Khoisan over an extended period of time led to cultural diffusion. This provides a framework for a discussion of Xhosa myths of origin and coming of death. Concepts of the supreme being are dealt with according to the different God-names, These are described together with their functions and the Khoisan and missionary influences on them. The whole is set within the context of Xhosa history indicating some of the influences which determined selection and… Read More

The author is a retired Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Navy and an acknowledged expert on shipwrecks. Here, he gives a detailed study of shipwrecks around the Goodwin Sands (the sandbanks in the English Channel), and comprehensive coverage of incidents from the early sixteenth century to the present day, including the great storm of 1703 in which four major men o'war and 1,190 men were lost. Over a thousand vessels are listed in the Wreck Index and the book is illustrated with seven wreck location charts, three maps and several photographs. Condition: This copy is in very good condition.
