cat40a. NY: Golden Hours, 1889 - 1890. Large format. Three volumes, black cloth. Spines are gone, covers mostly loose, some chipping to edges and occasional old yellowed tape repairs, very good internally, the individual covers in nice shape. These volumes contain Volume III, No. 53 (Feb. 2, 1889) through Vol. V, No. 130 (July 26, 1890). Many serializations and stories, several of which are fantasy, including Fred Thorpe's "TWENTY FATHOMS DEEP; or, The Boy Treasure Seekers. The Strange Story of a Mysterious Buried City in the Pacific Ocean" which is serialized over numbers 71 - 80. Another is Thomas P. Montfort's "UNDERGROUND: or, Adventures With the Toltecs", a lost-race tale spanning issues 118 - 127. There are many other serialized tales of crime, adventure and sport. Three heavy volumes, postage will be charged at cost.

Hand-tinted (clothing), with a facsimile of St. Cyr's signature beneath. Sheet size is 29cm x 46cm / 11.5 x 18 inches. At left: "H. Grevedon / 1824". At right: "G. Lith. de Delpech.". A very good copy, some foxing. Several varieties and sizes of these lithographs exist, with and without facsimile signatures. London: For The Author by N. Trubner and Co., 1877. . anticat16. First edition. xxxii + 604pp. Original purple cloth, printed paper spine label. Spine a bit sunned, light overall wear, rear hinge a bit loose, small hole at rear hinge, slight bubbling of cloth on back cover; in general, a clean and very good copy otherwise. List of Subscribers at front.

London: E. Rimmel, 1869 - 1879. Original decorative wrappers, each programme is 4pp; a single leaf, folded once to make a booklet (one, from 1877, is 8pp.). Mostly undated, but one contains an announcement of the first anniversary of the Theatre, and is dated December 20th, 1869. Another, in slightly larger format, is dated 1879. Condition is mostly very good - some have chips from corners and edges, and some have short tears or splitting at the spine. The issue of December 20, 1869 lists Mr. Henry Irving as appearing in "Uncle Dick's Darling". Irving later wrote a sketch for the "Clover Papers" in which he reminisced about this play at the Gaiety Theatre. The Gaiety Theatre opened in 1868, built on the site of the earlier Strand Musick Hall. These programmes were "Printed and Perfumed by E. Rimmel, 96, Strand," etc. ... The perfume has not survived the years, alas. For the lot:

Chicago & NY: Rand, McNally, 1892. First edition. Later wrappers, from Pratt's Circulating Library. A bit of edge wear, some soiling of wrappers at spine and edges, numbers penned on cover and first few leaves, a very good copy. Original wrappers not present. Issued as No. 49 in the Rialto Series. Not in Wright, although several of her other, later titles are included. A scarce early work by this Kentucky woman author,

Los Angeles: Black Sparrow, 1970. . First edition. Pictorial wrappers, bound with three metal bolts. Red-brown end papers. Short tears at top and bottom of spine, very light wear to edges of wrappers, otherwise fine. This is one of 600 copies in wrappers, of a total edition of 801.

Cambridge: Pym-Randall, 1968.. Red wrappers lettered in black. Lightly bumped, a fine copy. Limited to 226 copies, this is one of 200 numbered, signed by Gunn. A single poem. This is copy #198.

Leipzig: Arkstee und Merkus, 1747.. A copper engraved view on laid paper, uncoloured, from Volume 1 of Schwabe's Allgemeine Historie der Reisen (1747 - 1774). Image size is 13.5cm x 18.5cm. Text in German. Verso blank. In upper right corner: "No. 31." Clean, very good condition. This view by Bellin first appeared in Prevost's Histoire Generale des Voyages.... A view of the Governor of Mokha's banquet. Mokha (Mocha, al-Makha), in Yemen, is famous for its coffee.

NY & London: Putnam's, 1906.. First American edition. Blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, the title on a bed of red. Top edge gilt. A bit of discoloration of cloth at lower spine and edges, a clean very good copy generally. The British edition was published by Smith, Elder in the same year. Written in the form of diary entries.

Leipzig: Arkstee und Merkus, 1749.. A copper engraved view on laid paper, uncoloured, from Volume 5 of Schwabe's Allgemeine Historie der Reisen (1747 - 1774). Image size is 14cm x 19cm. Text in German. Verso blank. At upper right: "No. 30." No folds, clean, very nice condition. This view, possibly by Bellin, engraved by de Bakker, appeared earlier in Prevost's Histoire Generale des Voyages. It shows the Strait of Sang Wan Hab, on the River Tay in China. This is taken from an earlier print (reversed) found in John Green & Thomas Astley's "A New General Collection of Voyages...." (London: Astley, 1745).

Westborough, Mass.: Chronotype Printing Company, 1907.. 20pp. Original gray wrappers printed in black, stapled. Some marginal notes in pencil throughout, and in pen on last leaf. A few small stains to wrappers, corners a bit worn, very good. A scarce booklet.

Glasgow: R. & A. Foulis, 1750. Tenth edition. Disbound, lower corner chipped from title, pages loose, scattered foxing, bent page corners; a scruffy copy of this uncommon Foulis printing. First published in 1725.

London: 1771. 8vo. xx + 366 pages. Full calf, spine lettered in gilt on a panel of red. Marbled end papers. The calf is finished in an unusual marbled pattern. Large chip from the upper spine, not affecting the title; upper cover and first blank leaf detached; a clean very good copy otherwise. Early ownership signature of William Thomas Wyld on the verso of the front end paper, and that of a later owner on the detached blank. This issue has a colon after London on the title page. This is the so-called "Piccadilly Edition", a re-issue of the 1771 London edition. The author was assumed by some to be Edmund Burke; later scholarship suggests that it was in fact Sir Philip Francis (1740-1818). The Junius letters were serialized beginning in 1769, and many unauthorized and incomplete editions were issued soon after.

London: Cave,1748.. Engraved map, 18 x 13 inches (framed: 24.5 x 19.5 inches). Contemporary colouring, 24 coloured vignettes at edges. Old repaired tear on right side, clean and attractive overall. Published in George Smith's work: "A dissertation on the General Properties of Eclipses; and particularly the ensuing Eclipse of 1748, considered thro' all its periods." "Revised and Published according to Act of Parliament, Jan 1, 1748, by E. Cave."

Encyclopedia Britannica, [c.1790]. . Engraved double-hemisphere map, 14 x 8 inches (matted: 20 x 14 inches). Not coloured. Nice condition. In upper right corner: "Plate CCXIV". From the Encyclopedia Britannica, 3rd ed. 1797.

London: Published and sold by all the Booksellers, and by Thomas Wilson and Robert Spence, Printers, 1799. Twentieth Edition.. 12mo. in sixes. 143pp. Full tree calf, spine ruled in gilt and titled in gilt on a red panel. Folding frontispiece map (a double globe), two further maps, and a folding plate of the Positions of the Sphere. Ownership signature on the inner front cover dated 1799, old pencil notes on the verso of the title and a rear blank, discoloration of end papers, mild cracking of hinges, a sound and very good copy. A translation of du Fresnoy's 1836 work "Géographie des enfans, ou, Méthode abrégée de la géographie, divisée par leçons..." The first English edition recorded in Worldcat was published in 1837, Printed for Johnson and Newbery (who are also listed as publishers of the Twentieth Edition in 1799); this edition, printed in York by Wilson and Spence, is an uncommon issue. Quite a nice copy.
