London: Country Life, 1918. First Edition. One of the finest garden books of the twentieth century. Christopher Hussey and Gertrude Jekyll created this impressive pictorial treatise dealing with "garden design in relation to architecture, and, to some extent, with architectural design in relation to gardening." Gertrude Jekyll in her association with Hussey and more famously, Edward Lutyens "devised appropriate rather than merely fashionable solutions; a surveyor's grasp of line and contour, allied to understanding of colour and plants, gave distinction to her designs." Jekyll's books are highly collectible and remain among the most important of all writings in the oeuvre of the garden. Limited edition of 250 copies, signed by Douglas Stewart and Walter Stone. Quarto, black and white line drawings, original quarter green cloth over biege papered boards; occassional foxing to front foredge, an otherwise very fine copy.

London: David Bogue, 1849. Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier (1804-1866), pseudonym Gavarni, was a French master lithographer noted for his fashion and satirical illustrations. In 1847 he travelled to London and produced a series of images condemning the conditions of the English working-classes and urban poor, here used to illustrate a series of written descriptions by leading writers of the day. Quarto, original gilt cloth (expertly rebacked), all edges gilt, frontispiece, illustrated title-page and full-page plates throughout; cloth rubbed with some scattered marks, internally fine, a nice copy.

Berlin: Monatsschrift zur Förderung künstlerischer Reklame, 1931. Photographs by Charles Ogle of New York City, and fashion designs by Lisl Jokl. Also includes a feature on advertising artists from Czecho Slovakia, and 'The Camera as an Instrument of the Artist' by Charles Ogle. Quarto, bound in illustrated wrappers, brilliantly illustrated throughout, wrappers chipped.

London: Paul Jerrard, 1852. First Edition. Mid-nineteenth century opulence: two elaborate Victorian plate books with plates of fruit and flowers complimenting verse, fully printed in gilt. Two folios in original cloth with large colour card onlay on front board and gilt floral motif on rear, 24 full-page chromolithographic plates each facing a matching gilt printed poem; cloth mildly browned in book 1, binding rubbed and mild preliminary foxing in book 2, a very good set with beautiful clean plates.

"Reperire, apta atque reperta docendum Digerere, atque suo quæque ordine ritè locare, Durus uterque labor. Ut plurimis proslmus, enitimur." Vida, Lib. 3. Poetic. Cicero. Octavo, original olive green blind-blocked cloth, spine dulled, page edges browned, early ownership signature on front free endpaper, a good solid copy nonetheless.

A short and curious fairy tale illustrated with hand-coloured woodblock prints by British aritist and printmaker, Anne Brunskill (1923 - 2018). Translation by Helen Attlee. Limited edition of 120 copies signed by the translator and the artist. Quarto, bound in illustrated papered boards (back board a little rubbed) aach original hand-coloured print protected by a tissue guard.; a fine copy in a slipcase showing some moderate external wear.

Sydney: Darlinghurst Galleries, 1965. First Edition. Monograph tracing the development of an enigmatic Australian artist whose abstracted forms are infused with a strong spiritualism. Foreword by Peter Bellew, an abridged chronology, and an article and writings by the artist. Quarto, bound in original black cloth, 16 colour plates and 110 illustrations in monochrome; a fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper.

London: Eveleigh Nash & Grayson, 1928. YOUNG, Blamire. First edition, limited to 750 copies. Housed in decorative Batik paper boards and printed on rich cotton rag, with spirited colour plates by Blamire Young. The author, Viscount Hastings, studied under Diego Rivera and was the 16th Earl of Huntingdon. Quarto, twelve tipped-in colour plates (including frontispiece); original decorated papered boards with gilt text to cloth backstrip, some wear to the extremities of the boards, with the small ownership label of Rollo Hammet, light browning to free endpaper, otherwise a very good copy.

The Scots author was an avid collector of fairy tales from around the world and many of the stories in this collection, particularly the classic French tales, are translated here into English for the first time. In the preface Lang writes, "The stories in all the books are borrowed from many countries; some are French, some German, some Russian, some Italian, some Scotish, some English, one Chinese. However much these nations differ about trifles, they all agree in liking fairy tales." One of the French stories collected in 'The Green Fairy Book' may have provided inspiration for J.R.R. Sydney: Angus and Robertson, 1918. 'Today these booklets are generally regarded as children's items, but in their day they were issued in individual envelopes and were intended to be used as enlarged greeting cards... their contribution to the Australian pictorial propaganda of the First World War was pervasive and amusing and remains perhaps the only such work to survive with a timeless appeal.'
