Description:
[Philadelphia, 1885]. [1]p. Broadside. 19 x 10¼ inches. Cream-colored wove paper. Very good. The Germania Theater in Philadelphia was founded in 1877 by Gottlob Hammer and Heinrich Oberkirsch. The theater served a thriving German-speaking community until 1895 - a remarkable 17-year run. Almost daily, the Germania Theater presented German-language theatrical entertainment by a resident troop of players. They staged comic and dramatic plays, operettas, musical concerts and farces. This 1885 playbill broadside lists Gottlob Hammer as director and Heinrich Oberkirsch as music director (Kapellmeister). They are joined here by director of plays (Regisseur) Alexander Kost to mount a production of the musical farce Eine Leichte Person by Emil Pohl and with music by A. Conradi. Comic actor Alexander Kost had joined the Germania Theater cast in 1878. From 1882 to 1885 he directed their productions. Here, with Eine Leichte Person and its song and dance numbers, Kost directs the popular actress Mrs. Marie… Read More

Description:
London: Jonathan Cape, (1936). 293, [2], [8, (ads)]pp. Neat name in pencil on front endpaper. Publisher's pumpkin-colored cloth binding with green lettering; without the rare dustwrapper. Binding soil; overall, very good. First Edition. Inscribed by the author, Geoffrey Basil Maiden, under his pseudonymous name and dated in the year of publication: "To Mr. B.G.K. Allsop with gratitude and thanks from 'James Curtis' June 1936." A novel of petty crime and the gritty life of the down-and-out in London's underworld during the 1930s. The protagonist is the Gilt Kid, a young, and already unrepentant, career burglar. The book is noted for its authentic slang and depiction of London's West End. Purportedly, Curtis did his homework when writing The Gilt Kid by visiting area clubs and dives, listening and watching. Allsop was a real estate agent of Allsop & Co. who developed Soho Square for businesses in the late 1920 and "flats for literary people and artists" -perhaps Curtis was a tenant.
