Description:
(N.p., 1922. Set of eight cards, printed in red, along with a rules sheet. The cards form a drinking game; all are dealt to a group of eight, and each player must follow the pictorial instruction on the card placed before them. Five cards show a single cocktail, indicating one drink. One shows two, for two drinks that round. One shows the continental United States above the word "DRY," which excuses the player from imbibing. The final card displays a bee above the word "STUNG!", which requires the player to pay for the next round of drinks. The rules sheet concludes by stating that after "15 or 20 deals, someone is certain to have at least ‘One Exciting Night'," and we are inclined to agree. The game takes its name from D.W. Griffith's 1922 film One Exciting Night, though it does not follow the film's storyline. Considering that Prohibition was in effect at the time, it is unclear if this game was an official movie tie-in or unauthorized. All cards fine, rules sheet folded. All housed in a square… Read More

Description:
(Rockport, ME): Gehenna Press, 1998. Baskin, Leonard. Folio. (65)pp. From an edition of fifty, this is one of ten deluxe copies, accompanied by a page of Hecht's manuscript, three watercolor drawings by Baskin, one of the original woodcut blocks, and a suite of woodcuts printed in black with several hand-colored by Baskin. Signed by both Hecht and Baskin at the colophon; Baskin has also signed each of the prints in the book. Hecht's poems, rich with earthy imagery to communicate the individual and common depths of grief and joy, are each faced with a colorful woodcut of a flower. Baskin's signature dark shading and rough edges capture both the gritty beauty of the plants themselves and their untidy but profound reflection of humanity. Bound by Claudia Cohen in full peach morocco, with rules in both blind and gilt, an artful gilt laurel design and yellow leather onlays to covers, matching gilt spine decoration onlaid. Drawings and extra suite housed in cloth-covered chemise. Held, along with the book… Read More

Description:
NY: Robbin Ami Silverberg, 2021. Silverberg, Robbin Ami. Four volumes. One of a variable edition of twelve copies, signed by the artist. Silverberg's assemblage contends with religion, sacrifice, humanity, and language, explicating these profound concepts with careful craftsmanship and attention to the necessary experience of the reader. She freights the work with both communal and political meaning: the Jewish ritual burial of the tetragrammaton (the name of God), children killed in Gaza the Israel/Palestine conflict, and the call to "Say our/their/her name" that has been the klaxon of many recent protest movements. The first volume, "Geniza," explains the Geniza concept in letterpress on handmade paper decorated to mimic a lined notebook sheet. The page is itself literally buried among other papers, and the effect is doubled by a page in Hebrew pulped into one of the rear sheets, and redoubled by a carbon copy transfer housed against the rear board. The second volume, "GOD," presents the names of… Read More

Description:
Gambier, OH: Unit IV Arts, 2021. Sheffield, Ellen. 16mo. (10)pp. One of eighteen copies, signed by the artist. Sheffield's visual and poetic meditation on "lostness" stems from an article on Lost Person Behavior, the science of applying profiles to know how and where to search for someone, to address the pervasive and, at times, either abstract or tangible feelings of abandonment and hopelessness when faced with family histories of mental illness, suicide, substance abuse, and other mostly invisible manifestations of despair. By bridging scientific, physical lostness and psychological, emotional lostness, Sheffield voices the loneliness often inherent and underappreciated in individuality, especially when that individual considers the expansive and perhaps intimidating sweep of generational trauma. Sheffield gives that sweep visual grounding by spreading her poem's lines across interleaved pages, denying organization where the reader might crave it. She also sets them amid aerial images of snowbound… Read More

Description:
NY: Vincent FitzGerald & Co, 1989. Brown, Hannah. Folio. (32)pp. One of fifty copies, signed by the artist, Susan Weil. Throughout the text are scattered collages, cut papers, and etchings that work together to create an interactive, multimedia experience for the reader, who thus physically engages with the work in a manner reflective of reading Joyce's stream-of-consciousness literature. The book most obviously and completely points toward this characteristic freedom in a prepublication sampling of The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, which is among the many passages included in the original Giacomo Joyce manuscript and appears in later novels. That original manuscript, which was comprised of fifty fragments transcribed onto large sheets of sketching paper, coheres into a love poem tracking the course of Joyce's infatuation with one of his students whom he taught while in Trieste between 1911 and 1914. This copy specially bound by Hannah Brown in a full leather case binding, with boards of… Read More
