Heavy speckling to the spine (insect nibbling) and a little to the covers; both hinges cracked and the front just holding; brief ink note on f.f.e.p. Moderate foxing to some plates, mostly marginal but with a slight impact on the images in a few cases; foxing to the margins of text pages facing the glossy plates; mild toning to the matte plates. Good only, but a serviceable reference copy. FIRST EDITION. A significant study of a group of fungi including puffballs, stinkhorns, birds' nest fungi, and false truffles, describing over 150 species in great detail. A concise artificial key is provided. Original quarter calf over paper covered boards, with later typescript paper spine label and new endpapers. [26 cm.] Good plus. A few stains to covers; scattered foxing. SECOND EDITION, ENLARGED AND IMPROVED. The first edition of this form book was issued in 1822, with the title beginning: "Precedents for the Use of Justices of the Peace ... " Later editions had the title: "Getz's Forms ... Original blue-green cloth decorated in black and lettered in gilt on the spine. [18.2 cm.] Spine ends slightly rubbed, some faint soiling to joints, endpapers tanned near hinges, still a very good copy in original glassine dust jacket (spine panel sunned; a few small tears and tiny chips). FIRST EDITION. One of 420 copies printed for the Typophile subscribers, being Typophiles Chap Book #23. (There was also an edition of 350 copies issued simultaneously by the Book Club of California). Light rubbing to extremities; a little tanning near the edges of the front board. Minor foxing to frontispiece with negligible impact on the image; foxing to title page as well, but none elsewhere. The jacket has a jagged 3-cm long chip to the center of the spine panel, several other chips with a slight impact on lettering, a long tear along the fold between the front panel and front flap, tissue repairs to verso, and sun-fading to the spine panel. Gould & Lincoln imprint at base of spine. [20.1 cm.] Head of spine chipped, base of spine and corners worn, some rubbing and light spotting to cloth. Title page foxed; rather light scattered foxing elsewhere. Early penciled ownership inscriptions on front endpapers. Good. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, following the London edition of the same year (2 vols., titled: "Selections from the Correspondence of R.E.H. Greyson, Esq.") Although Rogers gives himself as the editor in the title, Greyson was an imagined correspondent and these epistles consist of reflections and advice by Rogers on various subjects. Rogers (1806-1877) was an English author and Christian apologist best known for "The Eclipse of Faith, or, A Visit to a Religious Sceptic" (1852).

A fine copy in very nearly fine dust jacket (minor rubbing to the jacket). FIRST EDITION. The first chapter discusses private academies in the 18th and 19th centuries and the first efforts to establish public schools. The remainder of the book is an account of the growth and administration of the public school system from 1885 to the time of publication. John E. Batchelor was himself a teacher and administrator in the Guilford County Schools. He has since worked as a consultant on school improvement and written several books including: "Race and Education in North Carolina: From Segregation to Desegregation" (2015).
