Description:
France: AG Printing Department, 1919. First edition. Handbill measuring 195 x 127 mm with text to recto only. A Fine example of a scarce piece, which is not listed in OCLC. As the American Expeditionary Forces under General Pershing faced the violence of the European warfront, women also took on more official military positions than they had in the past. "At the time of the First World War, most women were barred from voting or serving in military combat roles," but many professionally "provided support on the front lines as nurses, doctors, ambulance drivers and translators" as well as serving as secretaries, operators, and canteen workers (National WWI Museum & Memorial). In fact, "World War I marked the first major mobilization of American women in Europe in US history. More than sixteen thousand women served as part of the AEF in sex-segregated environments in non-combat roles. Thousands worked stateside in the armed services in order to free up men for war. Hundreds more traveled to France to… Read More

Description:
New York: Boni & Liveright, 1925. First edition. Very Good. Second state with "Devine" on contents page. Inscribed by the author: "To Mr. and Mrs. Pell | the best publicity agents an author ever had. Affectionately Anita Loos | Nov. 3, 1925." Book Very Good with spine a bit dulled and cocked, several newspaper clippings are tipped in on the early pages, presumably publicity work of the Pells. A comic novel about the roaring 20s and a runaway best seller. Inspired in part by H. L. Mencken and supported by him. Edith Wharton declared it was "The great American novel." There have been numerous adaptations for stage and screen, the most famous being the 1953 film starring Marilyn Monroe where she sang "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend." Quite uncommon with a personal inscription in the year of publication. Very Good.

Ownership stamp of Lady Ulrica Thynne (d. 1916) to front endpaper. A Near Fine copy, with a bit of light scattered foxing throughout. London. Fine/Near Fine. Limited to 410 copies signed by the illustrator, of which this is 331. Fine book bound in original vellum with gilt to spine and front board. Pictorial endpapers. Housed in a Near Fine slipcase with original paper label to top panel and retaining the original glassine jacket in exceptionally nice condition with trivial nicking to top edges. Among Christina Rossetti's most influential works, here combined with the dark and seductive illustrations of Rackham. "Set in a fairy world and exploring themes of temptation, sacrifice, and salvation, Goblin Market tells the story of a fraught encounter between two sisters, Laura and Lizzie, and evil goblin merchants. While Laura exchanges a lock of her golden hair for the chance to taste the goblins' enchanted 'fruit forbidden'...and the goblins violently attack Lizzie, smearing their fruits 'against her mouth' in an attempt to force her to eat" (BL). The story first appeared in Scribner's Magazine in February 1906, accompanied by six (one additional) Rackham illustrations. No English edition was ever issued. In a bright, Near Fine dust jacket that is price clipped, but otherwise presents very well. The author's third book, winner of the National Book Award and the William Dean Howell Award and published in an edition of just 4,000 copies. Pynchon's post-modern masterpiece, a rich, vertiginous book of sometimes frustrating complexity. Written in 1973, and set at the end of World War II, Gravity's Rainbow would be awarded both the National Book Award and be selected for the Pulitzer Prize. (Although it was denied the latter by the Pulitzer board on account of a particularly controversial passage.) Writing in The New Yorker, poet L. E. Sissman called Pynchon a "mathematician of prose" - and this is considered his greatest work.
