Salem, Mass.: Parker Bros., 1904. This game was produced in numerous variants; in both small and large formats; in various colors, and with varying cards and instructions. This is the smaller format, in a red box. While very one we’ve seen has come with the “Improved Rules,” this example appears to have the original printed rules and an additional printed page of “New And Improved Rules. Taking the Place of Rules (6) and (7).” It’s little more than a guess based on extensive experience, but this could be the earliest issued version, or at least an early one. Aside from a small crack in the side of the lid, excellent.

London: Constable, 1939. First Edition. Publisher’s stiff wrappers; price-clipped; minor fading and foxing; small glue spot under the cast list; very nearly fine. The play was the basis for a famous 1944 film version which starred Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman (an Oscar winning performance). It also marked the first screen role for the young Angela Lansbury, who was nominated for an Academy Award. An English 1939 film was suppressed by MGM so as not to interfere with this production. The title “Gaslight” has become a popular term to describe an intentional scheme to drive a victim into paranoia.

Garden City: Doubleday, Doran, 1944. First Edition. Tape stains on the rear endpaper; a very good copy. Inscribed by Parsons and a number of film stars, presumably at a party. These include Jack Benny, Clark Gable, Walter Pidgeon, Van Johnson, Pat’O’Brien, Robert Walker, Mickey Rooney, as well as Mervyn LeRoy and a few others.

New York: Morrow, 1930. First Edition. Minor foxing; very good to fine in a dust jacket with very minor staining and wear. While often lauded as the great Canadian W.W. I novel, it is widely conceded to be much more than that.

London: Alston Rivers, 1910. First Edition of a scarce book. Foxed; good; rebound in plain cloth at an early date, with the author’s name and the title on the spine in black.

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1947. First Edition. Cloth frayed and soiled; only good, but an association copy, inscribed to her editior, Peter Schwed, “To Peter - who wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. Gratefully, Laura Z. Hobson.” Made into a film of the same title, directed by Elia Kazan and starring the not very Jewish-looking Gregory Peck, which was, of course, the point.
