Firstly, the book's inscribed by the author. Secondly, the condition is fantastic. The book's in it's jacket which is fine, with trivial tanning to the spine and a 2mm tear to the lower edge of the jacket. Finally, there's a case for the importance of this book. The story was first published in 1881 in Harper's and involves travelling back in time to alter events in the future. The method of time travel is not mechanical, as in Wells' book, so doesn't carry the weight of that book in its place in the sf canon. Rather, the protagonist just operates beyond the restraints of time and space. This is little different to supernatural methods or dream-based backward time travel of earlier books. This must be the first draft with the amendments being so extensive; even the amendments have amendments. The hand in which the amendments have been made I suspect will be from one of the Wandrei brothers. It looks like Donald's hand (we have a number of manuscripts for comparison); though it is very compact it bears a good number of similarities. That said, other corrected typescripts that we have are more clearly in Donald's hand. The amendments are so extensive that one would have to expect great humility on the part of Howard to accept so much editing in the mid-stage of his writing output, though I did find a 1939 letter from Weird Tales rejecting one of Howard's stories so perhaps it could've been Donald.
