House Bill 143 was entitled "A bill for the relief of certain half-breeds of mixed bloods of the Dacotah or Sioux nation of Indians and their grantees." It related to the provisions of an act passed in 1854 granting the "half-breeds" scrip in exchange for land previously assigned to them under an 1830 treaty. This report from the Committee on Public Lands recommends against passage of the bill, which would have presented obstacles to railroad construction in Minnesota. The committee argues that "Congress ought not to interfere by special legislation, but should leave the parties to their legal rights." A scarce report, with only digitial copies located in OCLC.

A collection of hunting stories "from one who has spent a rich lifetime in the field with gun and dog, and in the blind with decoys and calls, from the time of great surplus and little pressure to the complications of the present day."

Dust jacket is price clipped, with light shelf wear. Jarvis was a British soldier and civil servant who spent 18 years as Arab Administrator in Egypt. Upon returning to England, he wrote several books of humorous reminiscences from his Middle Eastern experiences and essays on country living.

A complete, serviceable copy of this early, in-depth guide to display merchandising for hardware and general stores ("hardware" being used here a bit more broadly than it is today), covering everything from from color and form to fixtures and content, for windows that are themed, unthemed, seasonal, whimsical, practical, elaborate, elegant, and just plain odd. The starfishes collected during the expedition were all sent to Verrill, a highly accomplished invertebrate zoologist.

A very good copy with lght soiling to spine and back cover. Mary Crawford Fraser (1851-1922) was a writer of memoirs and historical fiction. She lived in Japan from 1888 to 1894 while her husband, Hugh Fraser, was the British Minister to Japan. The Heart of a Geisha is a historical novel that explores inter-class relationships in Japan. As described in Victorian Women Travellers in Meiji Japan (Sterry, 2009), it is " set in Kyoto just before the Restoration, and was inspired by some of the more dramatic aspects of the early life of Hirobumi Ito, who rose to be a member of the ruling political oligarchy and was the first cabinet prime minister of Japan....In the story, as in the real life of Ito, a samurai is assisted to escape his enemies with the help of a geisha.… Read More
