Description:
Washington, D.C., January 25, 1826.. [1]p., printed on a folio sheet, 12 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. Old folds, minor creasing and soiling, mild edge wear. Very good. Untrimmed. A rare slip-bill printing of a Congressional appropriations bill designed to provide funding for the construction of a monument to George Washington in the nation's capital. This House Bill sought to devote an indeterminate amount of funds to the project in order "to carry into effect a resolution of Congress, passed twenty-fourth December, seventeen hundred and ninety-nine, directing a marble monument to be erected in the Capitol, in honor of the memory of General George Washington." Such "slip bill" printings are quite scarce, as they were produced in small numbers for the use of lawmakers during the legislative process. They are uncommon survivals. As is evident from the text of this bill, efforts to memorialize George Washington in the nation's capital began while he was still alive. In fact, as early as 1783, the Confederation…

Description:
Boston: James R. Osgood and Compan, 1876. xvi,394pp. including numerous text illustrations, plus nine plates (including frontispiece) and one-page advertisement. Original decorative green cloth, stamped in black and gilt, neatly recased. Corners bumped, cloth worn. Early ink signature on fly leaf. Overall very good. Second American edition. Originally published in Paris; the first American edition appeared in Boston in 1872. In his own rather romanticized way, Viollet-le-Duc describes the origin and development of domestic architecture among the various "races" of mankind. The work has little value today as a meaningful history of domestic architecture, but it, and the author's other writings, are of immense historical importance for the influence they exerted on the thinking of the architectural profession in the late 19th century. HITCHCOCK 1314.

Bedford, ornately gilt, all edges painted red and gilt. Later bookplates on front pastedowns. Several maps trimmed close, one with very slight loss at fore-edge, a few leaves in Vol. III remargined. With blank R4 in Vol. I, lacking initial blanks in volumes III and IV. Very light offsetting from plates, occasional faint foxing. A fine and handsome set. The second great collection of English voyages, expanding upon and greatly adding to the work of Hakluyt, whose manuscripts Purchas took over after Hakluyt's death. Purchas collects over twelve hundred separate narratives of explorations in every part of the world. Many of the accounts relate to the New World, especially Virginia, and one of the…

Cheyenne: [Press of Knight & Leonard], 1877.. 270 [of 272]pp., including fourteen full-page illustrations and several in-text illustrations. Lacking the final advertisement leaf. Original printed front wrapper only. Spine heavily chipped, a few small chips along edges. Text tanned but generally quite clean, with scattered light foxing and a few stains. Contemporary ownership signatures on front wrapper and titlepage. A good copy of a fragile book, lacking the rear wrapper and the final advertising leaf. Surely one of the most rapidly composed pieces of prose written on the road in America. As the author points out in the preface, scarcely sixty days elapsed between the proposal to write this work and its publication. The period also encompassed his honeymoon, and his wife tells of the trip during which the work was written in her book, FIFTEEN THOUSAND MILES BY STAGE. Strahorn wrote while travelling, and by the time he arrived back in Chicago, where the book was actually printed (by Knight &…
