For twenty years forward the only banks allowed in the District are the Bank of Washington and the Bank of the Metropolis; in Georgetown the Bank of Columbia and the Bank of Georgetown; in Alexandria the Bank of Alexandria and the Bank of Potomac. Also includes the rules governing incorporation, dividends, etc.

A rare slip-bill printing of a Congressional appropriations bill designed to provide funding for the construction of a monument to George Washington in the nation's capital. This House Bill sought to devote an indeterminate amount of funds to the project in order "to carry into effect a resolution of Congress, passed twenty-fourth December, seventeen hundred and ninety-nine, directing a marble monument to be erected in the Capitol, in honor of the memory of General George Washington." Such "slip bill" printings are quite scarce, as they were produced in small numbers for the use of lawmakers during the legislative process. They are uncommon survivals. Maltese cross at head of title, printed entirely in italic type. Contemporary and later manuscript annotations in ink and later pencil annotation on printed sheet. Accomplished in manuscript at Soria, Spain in July 1797, printed signature of "Manuél de Asprér" accompanied by his paraph ("rúbrica"). Moderately soiled, particularly at margins, slight chipping at edges. A good copy. A rare document printed in the late 1790s concerned with the astonishing prices for grains, seeds, and barley in Spain at the time. In order to avoid this situation in the future, the author of the memorandum, Manuél de Asprér, requests that all local priests supply estimates of the next harvest of all types of grains. Printed entirely in italic type and accomplished in manuscript in Soria, Spain in July 1797. Not recorded in OCLC.

Original decorative green cloth, stamped in black and gilt, neatly recased. Corners bumped, cloth worn. Early ink signature on fly leaf. Overall very good. Second American edition. Originally published in Paris; the first American edition appeared in Boston in 1872. In his own rather romanticized way, Viollet-le-Duc describes the origin and development of domestic architecture among the various "races" of mankind. The work has little value today as a meaningful history of domestic architecture, but it, and the author's other writings, are of immense historical importance for the influence they exerted on the thinking of the architectural profession in the late 19th century. Binding slightly soiled. Ownership stamp at head of titlepage. Text block beginning to spring, very light age toning. A good copy. The second edition, "enlarged and improved," of this thoroughly practical work aimed at "the plain, common-sense man" interested in both gaining personal pleasure and increasing the value of his real estate by planned landscaping. The plates in this edition are further captioned: "Drawn for Elliott's Landscape Gardening." McGrath only lists the 1881 edition, but neither edition is in Bennett. McGRATH, p.192 (1881 ed).
