[Tokyo] 1989, Suntory Museum of Art. Stiff buff wrs., very good, 55 color, 73 b.w. photos, 85p. Japanese text. Hiraga Gennai [1728-1779] was a famous and most celebrated writer and botanist. He became a Rangaku-sha [Scholar of Dutch Learning] and studied Dutch under a Dutchman in Naga- saki & then Chinese classics under Heizan Miura, and botany under Moto-o Tamura a physician and pharmacologist of the Shogunate. He wrote a large amount of books, made Japan's first thermometer. In 1776 he made a small electric generat- used for medical therapy purposes, and was the first Japan- ese to experiment with electricity. Learned Western style oil painting and operated a mine, translated Dutch books into Japanese. This work outlines his work as an inventor, naturalist, technician, novelist, poet, doctor, as well as the world of his fellow artists and scientists.
