Volumes I-III contain 155 plates depicting priests; Volumes IV-V contain 127 plates depicting nuns. Each plate mounted on stiff card with a ruled border and accompanied by a leaf of manuscript description. Manuscript list of plates at the end of each volume. In modern full blue morocco, covers decoratively bordered in gilt, spines decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, with a red morocco gilt lettering label, gilt board edges and turn ins, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Ink stamp of the Forbes Library, Northampton, Mass., on the verso of most plates. Armorial stamp of Henry Thomas Coghlan on the leaf in each volume. Yokohama: Yokohama Printing and Publishing Company. First Edition . Soft cover. Good. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. OGAWA K. In brown decorative printed stiff paper wraps, with 2 silk ties, front and rear covers are chipped to base, corners tips are gone, ink name to head of front cover (Thomas Pugh Davies). Internally, [2], [1] map (coloured), [1], 2-3 pp, [1], 9 leaves of text (by James Murdoch), 1 leaf of Japanese text, 29 B&W Collotype plates on 17 leaves + 1 map, printed tissue guards, small oval library stamp to lower corner, library label to verso of upper cover, not dated but c1890, very occasional spot. (404*297 mm). Ogawa was the first Japanese to produce collotype prints in the country in 1888, four years after returning from Boston having learnt the most advanced photographic techniques there. This and another 10 titles were produced for the International market.

In a superb full black morocco, elaborate blind tooling, gilt Royal coat of arms (VR), edges brushed. Spine. raised bands, blind tooling, tiles in gilt, edges brushed. Internally, half title, frontis, [5], (vi-x), [6], [1], 2-384 pp, 51 illustrations (16 being full page, 5 of which are coloured), marbled endpapers, text block edges in red, blind stamp at head of tp (DEpartment of Science and Art). A lovely binding. Tyrwhitt, who in addition to his writings on art, published a number of sermons, theological tracts, and a novel, Hugh Heron, Ch. Ch.: an Oxford Novel (1880). See ODNB.

Bentham, botanist, whose introduction to the Handbook was very important, being used again, only slightly modified, to set out a recommended botanical procedure in the Colonial Floras-the series describing the plants of the British empire written at Kew in the nineteenth century. (221*145 mm). A satirical look at Victorian society, their manners, mores and class rigidity. The son of the family, the central character of the book, has many hurdles to overcome in pursuit of a happy ending.
