Haikus from the poet's visit as an AmPart (American Participant) in India, Pakistan and Israel for USIS. An early book from the press as it was transitioning from letterpress to one of the leading independent publishers. Fine copy.

St. Paul, MN: North Central Publishing, 1973. First Edition. 8 vo. 20 pp. Limited to an edition of 1250, this is the 1973 North Central Christmas Book. The text is taken from " A Rosary of Mystery Plays" translated by Margaret S. Mooney. Printed in two colors on Curtis rag with the text set in Samson uncial. Designed by Frank Kacmarcik. Illustrated. Orange patterned cloth with gilt lettering and design. With cover slip with Christmas message an limitation number (1181) intact. Inscribed "For Adrian and Joyce Wilson/artists of the book!" by Kacamrcik. A nicely printed book inscribed to two of the Bay Area's greatest book printers and designers. Spine maybe a touch faded, otherwise fine.

Santa Cruz: Nathanel Mackey, 1983. First Edition. Illustrated wrappers, 8vo. 159 pp. A long-running, if irregularly published periodical (the first published in 1974) edited by Mackey. Among the poets (there is prose, too) in this issue: Mackey, Mahmoud Darweesh, David Melzer, Robert Kelly, Yusef Komunyakaa, Bell Hooks, Michael Palmer and Susan Howe. Early issues very scarce. Easily Very good, light wear and rubbing but tight.

Gold patterned cloth over black cloth with paper spine label, in scarce dust jacket; small 8vo. 45 pp. Boards rubbed and lightly worn, a bit more so at ends. Dust jacket is chipped, worn at folds, nearly detached at spine (still 95 % complete), verso moderately foxed (in removable protective archival jacket). VG/G+. An early ambitious work from the great man of letters, who would win among other things the Pulitzer Prize, the Bollingen, the Tony and an Academy Award.

Story, WY: Dooryard Press, 1986. First Edition. Sewn wrappers; square 8vo. [20 unnumbered pages.] Number 178 of 300 copies signed by the author. Letterpress printed. Very good with some creasing to covers and light wear. Located in the tiny town of Story, Wyoming, Dooryard Press was operated by Barbara and Tom Rea from 1981 to at least 1986. The Press published the work of Wyoming's first Poet Laureate & novelist Peggy Simpson Curry (1911-1987), Richard Hugo, Alberto Álvaro Ríos (Arizona's first Poet Laureate), Charles Levandoski (Wyoming's second Poet Laureate), Lee Bassett, Sam Hazo and others. Pasadena (?): N.p., Circa 1940. First Separate Printing. Handbill ("Reprint From Original") for the Book and Author luncheon at the elegant Vista Del Arroyo Hotel in Pasadena, CA; 9 x 5 3/8 in. The event was interrupted when members of Aimee Semple McPherson's temple picketed because the Hughes' poem included lines "most uncomplimentary" to the evangelist. This is presumably the original leaflet handed out by McPherson's church members and subsequently printed in The Saturday Evening Post. The poem "Goodbye Christ" was first printed in 1932 in the NEGRO WORKER in the Nov./Dec. issue, and reprinted three more times including in THE SATURDAY EVENING POST in the Dec. 21, 1940 issue after the event was canceled (or Hughes withdrew - reports vary). None of the printings were authorized, the POST according to Prof. Best printed without comment. Very near fine copy, never read. Kelleher A-25. Hall comments in Kelleher that this "is his best miscellaneous book of poems". His first book with Random House, after leaving Harper Collins because his longtime editor had been fired, his new editor Jonathan Gallassi (now publisher of FS&G, and a major figure in the poetry world) was fired, and the book in the hands of a third editor had poor sales. It would go on to win the Lenore Marshall Prize.
