A very good or better copy, gently tapped at a few corners, in a fine dust jacket. This copy SIGNED by MLB pitcher David Wells on the front free endpaper, with the note "P. Description:
[no place, but Lakewood, OH]: [self-published], 1956. Hardcover. Fine/very good. Octavo, 124pp. Copyright page states: "Volume Twenty-One" and "Handicraft. Typed and Bound by the Author." Seemingly hand-typed onto nice handmade paper. The book is well-constructed, with the signatures folded in the usual fashion, thus Knowlton knew what she was doing. The boards bear a nicely executed navy and gold decorative pattern, with a typed label on the spine. The dust jacket is also handmade, from thin blue paper, with several neatly trimmed paper decorations applied to the front panel, along with the author and title. The book is in fine, uread condition, while the jacket has some toning and a few small tears. Address label of "Mrs. Harry D. Knowlton" of Lakewood, OH (possibly the author, or perhaps a close relative) to the front flap. Lucia has SIGNED it on the front free endpaper with a generic inscription. The contents consist of poetry, and her own copyright page lists a number of contemporary journals… Read More

Description:
London: Jonathan Cape, 1936. Third impression. Hardcover. Fine. Octavo, 284pp., illustrated. A delightfully unique copy of this UK edition of Hemingway's great memoir of hunting big game in Africa. Bound in tan rough-grained canvas cloth, with handmade cut-out label depicting the head of a kudu (much like the one which appears in print opposite the title page), and Hemingway's name on a black label, printed in green. The binder has very ably inserted the front and rear panels and flaps of the dust jacket (also a stated third impression, matching the book) before and after the text, and the top is silvered. The jacket has been trimmed slightly to fit within the book, and it's possible that the page block was also slightly trimmed. The binding is rather plain, but highly evocative of its subject; befitting Heminway's style. The contents are extremely fresh and clean; a fine example. The UK edition of "Green Hills of Africa" is quite uncommon; later reprints from 1944 and 1954 are much easier to obtain… Read More

[Waikiki]: [Outrigger Hotel?], 1970. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. One bifold flyer, 8.5" x 11" when folded, [4pp.]. Very good with a small closed tear at the top of the front wrap, and a flattened crease throughout. Else clean and bright. A fun and quirky handbill advertising the dynamic Society of Seven Hawaiian band and variety show, which still performs occasionally with some of its original members. Unfolds to reveal a full-page spread of the members, their names, and a punchy description of their act. A nice ephemeral piece of Hawaiiana, and we found no copies in OCLC at the time of listing.

Description:
Honolulu: Jos. Schwartz, Ltd, 1911. First Edition. Staplebound. Good. Square octavo, 56pp. A good copy only in the publisher's yellow stapled wraps, and printed on yellow paper stock. Spine dampstained, scrunch to front wrap, and the last five leaves have partial loss at the bottom corners, with some minor loss to content. A vanishingly rare ca. 1910 trade catalogue for a Honolulu dealer of fine tools for jewelers, opticians, watchmakers, and other craftsmen. Handsome illustrations on every page. We have never seen a trade catalogue from Hawaii anywhere near this early. Not located in OCLC. Though the loss at the last few leaves is regrettable, most of the 56 pages of content are quite clean and fresh (the noted dampstain not affecting the interior).

Description:
Beaumont, CA: [self-published], 1967. First Edition. Staplebound. Very good +. Quarto, 39pp.; 10pp. Bound in self-wrappers, side-stapled, as issued. A few droplet stains to front cover, a touch of edgewear, but clean and sound; very good or better. Either mimeographed or photocopied from a typescript. Published posthumously by the author's son, the main content is a long poem exploring the history and meaning of the Holocaust. In an essay which follows, the author explains how he--an Italian Catholic--became interested in the Jewish people and in the subject of the Holocaust and Nazi terror. While the author is in some sense an amateur, he is neverthless earnest, cerebral, and talented. OCLC recors a surprising dozen or so holdings, but the volume is scarce in commerce.

Description:
[no place], 1930. Very good. A wonderful group of Depression-era homemade Monopoly pieces (well over 100 in all). Included is an original pamphlet containing the official rules, from an actual official Monopoly set. This is copyrighted 1936, the first year of production, and we presume it to be near-contemporary, and an indicator of the approximate date that the pieces were created. There are no character tokens, houses, hotels, or dice, and there is no board, however all of the other elements are represented. All of the title deeds were typed on paper, which was cut out and pasted to a cut-up thick cardstock/chipboard backing. Some of the backing material was repurposed from what appears to be a railroad schedule advertisement. The paper money is represented in several different colors of cheap, thin paper, each of which was hand-stamped with a purple stamp. The "Community Chest" and "Chance" cards were stamped on one side with those respective monikers, and the content on the verso was written by… Read More

Description:
Canaan, Ohio: Self-published, 1890. First Edition. Folded sheet. Very good. One bifold pamphlet, measuring about 5.5" x 3.5" when folded. A very good example of this highly ephemeral advertisement for offspring of a breeding horse named Banco-Wilkes. Paper shows creasing, old folds, and some mild dust-soiling, but is overall rather well-preserved. Advertised details are described economically, using many equestrian terms unfamiliar to this cataloguer. Regardless, an interesting little piece of local Ohio equestrian history, with an attractive engraving on the front wrap.

Cincinnati: Smith & Swinney, 1871. Tenth edition. Hardcover. Fair. Octavo, 96pp., 46pp., illustrated. Stated Fifty-Fifth Thousand of this edition. A fair copy in the publisher's printed boards with black cloth spine. Rear board partly separated from the spine, but still attached by rope. Contents generally clean, with a few isolated stains. Board edges rubbed and front outer joint partly cracked. A jam-packed housekeeping guide, with a delightful and unexpected companion volume at rear, containing engraved portraits and biographies of some of the leading military and political figures of the late Civil War, among them Abraham Lincoln, Joseph Hooker, Ulysses S. Grant, Philip Sheridan, and others. Though varying editions of the handbook are retained by a number of institutions, we count just a handful of holdings for this edition.

Description:
[no place given, likely Cambridge, Mass.]: [no publisher given, likely a Harvard club], 1908. Newspaper. Very good +. Large tabloid-style newspaper, measuring about 14" x 19.5", and unfolding to about 28" x 19.5". [4]pp. In very good or better condition with old folds and creases, but quite bright and clean. Tongue-in-cheek humor newspaper meant for Harvard students, published in "Shamebridge, Mess." Loaded with inside jokes and some topical humor of the period, along with several "articles" and "advertisements" which play up the "ladies' journal" theme, ostensibly advertising corsets and the like, even though the intended audience was mostly male. Since the very top of the front panel reads "Extra!" it is possible that this was a supplement to an issue of the Harvard Lampoon or a similar magazine, but OCLC records zero holdings in worldwide libraries (including Harvard). Presumably quite scarce, and of interest to any Harvard… Read More
