Description:
Paris: Hotel de Thou, 1785. First French Edition. Illustration. Very Good. John Webber. [Illus 8.5x14in on 10.5x15.5in Sheet] ; Plate No. 54, uncolored; Some soiling and age toning at edges, vertical fold crease, single worm hole entrance and exit. John Webber (1752-1793) was the official artist that accompanied Captain Cook on the third voyage of the Resolution and Discovery, 1776-1780. This voyage was to the islands of the Pacific, Australia, the Pacific Northwest America, Alaska, Kamchatka and Hawaii. In Hawaii, Cook was killed in a misunderstanding with the natives at Kealakekua Bay. This illustration was from a brief encounter with the natives of Norton Sound, Alaska. Webber likely sketched the illustration, a woman with a child on her shoulder a man standing behind her and a log hut, from Cooks journal descriptions of the encounter (from The Art of Captain Cook's Voyages, Volume III Rudiger Joppien and Bernard Smith, Yale University Press, 1988).
