Description:
This is a stated first edition of My Life as an Author and Editor by the influential American journalist H.L. Mencken (1880-1956).

It was well-received and was a best-seller for some time--it's now sold in paperback.

This copy is brand new and unread. It's only flaw is due to an issue with the bindery--see photo of the spine.

Other than that, it's perfect. No adornments, plain and elegant.

Description:
This is a vintage copy of Handy Andy: A Tale of Irish Life, written in 1841 by the Irish novelist, composer, painter and songwriter Samuel Lover (1797-1868). It centers around Andy Rooney, a fellow who has the knack of doing everything the wrong way. It is a hilarious farce regarded as a way to "purge melancholy".
This is one of the Everyman's Library copies, published by Dent in 1954. You can still find the odd copy in the UK but they're rare in North America.
This copy was purchased at Eaton's, the (now-gone) Canadian department store. The owner attached the receipt to the inside front cover with a bookplate.
The dust jacket is not in the best of shape.
The cover has some fingerprints on it and needs cleaning.
The inside is perfect.

Description:
Hans Brinker, or TheSilver Skates: A Story of Life in Hollandis a novel by American author Mary Mapes Dodge, first published in 1865. The story takes place in the Netherlands and is a colorful fictional portrait of early 19th-century Dutch life, as well as a tale of youthful honor.
The book's title refers to the beautiful silver skates to be awarded to the winner of the ice-skating race Hans Brinker hopes to enter. The novel introduced the sport of Dutch speed skating to Americans, and Hans Brinker is still considered the prototypical speedskater. The book also gave us the story of the little Dutch boy who plugs a dike with his finger.
I have looked everywhere and can't find an identical copy of this book.
It is undated but, because of the style of illustrations and type, I'm dating it at 1925. Published by Grosset & Dunlap as part of the Companion Library.
It is blue boards heavily etched with a black design—on both covers and the spine. 336 pages, all clean and clear, although starting to darken.… Read More

Description:
Chasing Rainbows is a 1930 American Pre-Code romantic musical film directed by Charles Reisner, starring Bessie Love and Charles King, and released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The supporting cast features Jack Benny, Marie Dressler, and Polly Moran. This was Jack Benny's first dramatic role in a motion picture.
It was filmed in black and white, but had two Technicolor sequences, which were lost in the 1965 MGM vault fire. The rest of the movie survives and is on DVD in the Warner Archive Collection.
The movie introduced the song Happy Days Are Here Again, by Jack Yellen and Milton Ager. This song has been recorded hundreds of times, but its most famous version is by Barbra Streisand, who really laid claim to it.
This is four sheets of music plus covers. There are 3 little tears and a crease; a framer can do a nice job with it though.
Note: I have lots of vintage sheet music listed here, some singly, many in bundles. You're welcome to create your own bundle, or just buy one piece from… Read More

Description:
This is a mylar-wrapped copy of Harlot's Ghost, the 11th of the 13 novels written by the American writer Norman Mailer (1923-2007).Narrated by Harry Hubbard, a second-generation CIA man, the novel looks into the depths of the American soul and the soul of Hugh Tremont Montague, code named Harlot, a CIA man obsessed. This is not only a copy of the first printing, it's a copy from the first print run in which the bindery made a huge mistake--it put the covers on backwards and upside-down. So the cover which you see in photo # is on the back, with the words 'Norman Mailer' on the bottom. And the text on the spine is upside-down.It is 1310 pages, including indexes. It weighs 4 lbs. This copy has not been read but the original owner put a bookplate in it (it's attractive and can be removed). There is shelfwear to the spine; it looks like fading, but it's dusty so it can be brushed up. Otherwise pristine.
Note: If you are outside of North America, the quoted shipping price is for surface mail without… Read More

Description:
This is a first edition (UK) of Haroun and the Sea of Stories, a children's novel written in 1990 by the British writer Salman Rushdie. After Iran's Ayatollah Khomeni issued a fatwa against Rushdie over The Satanic Verses
two years earlier, Rushdie was in hiding, and under protection. This meant that he was separated from his son, and he wrote these stories for him. The boy was 12 at the time. It is a phantasmagorical story that begins in a city so old and ruinous that it has forgotten its name, and it is an allegory for problems that exist in society, from the viewpoint of the young Haroun. The dust jacket (unclipped) of this copy has minor shelfwear, mostly yellowing of the white corners on the inside flaps and back. The book itself (218 pages) does not appear to have been read. There is a faint mark on the front cover--it's not a scratch and may come off. The outside of the pages edges have darkened a little. Otherwise perfect.
