Paper-covered boards with gilt leather title label on spine, paper chipped along front hinge, text pages starting to brown as usual, but all 132 hand-coloured plates clean and fresh.

Lonicer (1528-1586) married printer Christian Egenolph's daughter and became a partner in the firm. From 1551, the firm published herbals under Lonicer's name.Early editions had the plant names printed Latin in Roman and Italic type, and German in Schwabacher type. First edition of one part of René Primevère Lesson's study of exotic birds in their natural habitat made aboard the Coquille on its world voyage, 1822-1825. As second surgeon on the scientific circumnavigation, Lesson was responsible for the botanical and zoological goals of the expedition. His work on hummingbirds was authorative. He described over 100 species of hummingbirds, out of the 330 known today, and his illustrations were copied by Sir William Jardine in his Naturalist's Library.

Good copy of Heinrich Lödel's reproductions of Holbein's Alphabet of Death.The painter Hans Holbein's Dance of Death Alphabet, fully reproduced in 24 woodcuts from the Dresden originals for the first time by H. Lödel in Göttingen.According to the exhaustive Dance of Death website dodedans.com, Holbein's alphabet of Death was first used in 1524. Holbein's designs were cut in small woodblocks in incredible detail by the engraver Hans Lutzelburger. These are really dynamic scenes, full of action and drama. In many, two skeletons grapple with their victim, violently grabbing, pulling and murdering with boney arms to fill the tiny square behind the initial letter with action.
All 24 initials printed in black, with decorative borders in sepia by the painter Georg Osterwald.
Heinrich Lödel (1798-1861) was a German painter and etcher, based in Göttingen from 1819. He was later the university engraver at Georg-August University.

This set of 3 volumes (volumes 6, 7, 8 in the series) includes 21 pages of text and indexes, and 100 color woodcuts of fragrant herbs or medicinal plants.Plants include angelica, peony, pepper, cardamom, nutmeg, turmeric, jasmine, tulip, rosemary, and many more. The plants were used in Chinese traditional medicine or kanpo.Condition: Washi paper covers scuffed, but interior clean and bright, color plates vivid and vibrant.Kan'en Iwasaki or Tsunemasa Iwasaki (1786–1842) was a Japanese botanist, zoologist and entomologist. The plates show quite an extraordinary parade of 18th century scenes in pubs, hairdressers, shops, dentists and living rooms. A drunk vomits into a bowl at a bar, a wife beats a husband, a demon steals from a preacher, ugly bumpkins gurn, drunken rustics brawl, foppish politicians read the Magna Carta, a judge molests a female witness, a barber fleeces a Macaroni, a sailor is cheated of his prize money, etc.
There are four plates of dentists using tongs and string to extract teeth from unhappy patients. Henry Constantine Richter (1821-1902) was an English zoological illustrator who produced a large number of handcoloured lithographs of birds and mammals, mainly for the scientific books of the renowned English 19th century ornithologist John Gould. Gould was fascinated by hummingbirds and exhibited his extensive collection of 100s of these tiny birds in taxidermy cases at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. The print (51cm x 34cm) is in very good condition, with very slight age toning overall, mounted in a cream-coloured French matt (71cm x 54cm).
