[24 cm.] A near fine copy in a very good or better dust jacket. Book has slightest rubbing to spine ends and minor dust soil to top edge. Spine panel of dust jacket is a little sunned and shows tiny (half centimeter) chips at ends, not affecting lettering. Else a bright, attractive copy. FIRST EDITION. A survey of South African society, including much on traditional Zulu culture. The author was an Italian explorer, who wrote numerous books on sub-Saharan Africa and made documentary films of the region.

Tiny bump to edge of front board, minor rubbing to cloth, a few small spots to front endpapers. Faint foxing to gutters of some leaves, interior is otherwise clean and bright. FIRST EDITION.

Boston: Printed and published, under the patronage of the Company, by E.G. House, a member, 1820. 8vo (signed in fours). 199 pages. Original quarter orange paper over grey paper covered boards with printed paper spine label. [24 cm.] Spine cracked in several places with the text block holding by cords. It is holding well enough that the book is serviceable for reading as is, although a sympathetic backing is probably desirable. Spine also shows some chips, with some loss to the printed label. Boards soiled and with a faint notation on the front board; wear to all corners; and bend to the front board. Some chips, tears, and browning to the endpapers. Internally very good with occasional foxing only, most evident on the first page of text (see photo); some soiling to p. 158 not affecting legibiltiy; and a closed, marginal tear to pp. 121-122 in no way affecting the text. Scanlon's brief history of the College (pp. 3-8) is followed by lists of the faculty and graduates, a list of known living students and their places of residence, and several addresses by the school's founder and his wife. Shenandoah Normal College was a small, co-educational institution founded in 1883. The prospectus for the college proclaimed it a "School for the People . . . Hart, Sr. on the front pastedown and his embossed address stamp on the front flyleaf and the title page. George Luzerne Hart (1874-1968), a longtime resident of Roanoke, is remembered for his efforts to decode the ciphers contained in “The Beale Papers“ (1885) and to find the treasure supposedly buried by Thomas J. Beale in Bedford County in the early 19th century. THIRD EDITION. The rare first edition was issued in 1833 and contained a chapter on slavery and an account of Mannheim's captivity that were omitted in subsequent versions. Original blue cloth with gilt spine lettering and gilt emblems on the front cover. 23.5 x 16.5 cm. Good. Spine is partially faded, gilt is a bit dull, some spotting to the spine and covers, name on front free endpaper. Leaves are just a little toned, but clean. FIRST EDITION. The book is in two parts, with Arnold Lloyd Fletcher writing the history of the American Legion and his wife, Mae Pitzer Fletcher, providing the account of the work of ladies in the American Legion Auxillary. Each provides sketches of individual posts/units in addition to a history of the larger organization. One of Mr. Fletcher's chapters provides a brief discussion of the "Negro Posts of North Carolina" (pp. 194-197).

Philadelphia: James K. Simon, 1851. 12mo. 538 pages, plus six hand-colored plates, including frontispiece. Original embossed blue cloth with gilt lettering and decorations on spine. [17.6 cm.] Good plus. A little wear to extremities. Early gift inscription on front free endpaper. Offsetting to title page. Occasional, mostly marginal stains, affecting the text in a few places without impact on legibility. Later edition; probably the second by Simon, who previously issued the work in a smaller format and with two fewer plates in 1844. The publisher advertises this as "a new and much improved edition" and "the only complete edition published in the United States."

London: George Routledge & Co., 1858. Small 4to. xv, [1], 391 pages, plus frontispiece. Illustrated with numerous engravings by the Brothers Dalziel after works by J. Everett Millais, Birket Foster, John Tenniel, and many others (some full-page, but all reckoned in pagination). Original full brown morocco, extensively decorated in blind, with gilt spine lettering. All edges gilt and tooled in a crisscross pattern. Evidently a publisher's deluxe binding. [23 cm.] An attractive ex-library copy with no external markings and only light internal markings. Tasteful bookplate of Sondley Reference Library on front pastedown, embossed stamp of the institution on first few leaves and several others; small number stamp on verso of title and in lower margin of one leaf. Otherwise very good. Light rubbing and a few tiny stains to leather. Light to moderate scattered foxing, a bit heavier on frontispiece and title. Binding is solid and tight. FIRST EDITION.
