Description:
Santa Barbara: Black Sparrow Press, 1982. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. Number 236 of 350 copies, signed with a drawing by Bukowski on the limitation page. A Fine copy in Nearly Fine publisher's acetate. Boards clean and vivid with yellow cloth backstrip retaining the delicate paper label to the spine. Bright blue endpapers and an interior that appears unread. Publisher's acetate with expected minor scuffs. Ham on Rye (1982), Bukowski's semi-autobiographical novel is an intimate, unabashed look at the author's childhood and the youthful exploits that shaped him into a prolific and notorious author. Here a young Bukowski (called Henry Chinaski), raised in a lower-middle class family and abused by his draconian father, struggles with feelings of alienation. The novel looks unflinchingly at post-war America and a young man's desire for escapism be it through library books or cheap booze. Krumhansl 74. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

Description:
Scotland; United States, 1928. Oblong album measuring 135 x 185mm and containing 79 handwritten pages and 16 original illustrations. Presented to Evelyn by her father, the album opens with a hand-drawn bookplate and dedication; entries from friends, most from Aberdeen, are dated across five years and document Evelyn's time in school and in her early work. A research rich document, with content related to gender, sexuality, marriage, family, employment and education. Without a surname, Evelyn will remain partially hidden by history; but the survival of her friendship album gives us insight into her personality, the friends with whom she surrounded herself, and the varying attitudes her generation and community had about what constituted a satisfying life. The opening dedication from "Dad" suggests like many similar albums that its purpose is to provide its owner with comfort "in the Autumn of my days" by prompting memories old "the old friends that I once had. The highly Victorian sentiments of the… Read More

Description:
London, Paris, Berlin, New York, Montreal: Raphael Tuck and Sons Ltd, 1910. Early edition. Very Good. A Very Good copy of this uncommon Louis Wain title. Illustraded through-out in Wain's iconic style, with 8 color plates and numerous black and white illustrations within the text. Gift inscription dated Xmas 1912. At the end of the nineteenth century, Louis Wain (1860-1939), the Edwardian cat artist, became a household name as an illustrator of cats, whom he depicted in all sorts of activities, from skating and playing cricket to driving motor cars, attending dances, and playing musical instruments. "He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves" (H.G. Wells). Very Good.

Description:
Edinburgh: Thomsons Brothers, 1822. First edition. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards with gilt to spine. Measuring 140 x 80mm and collating complete including frontis and publisher's catalogue to rear: vii, [1, blank], 199, [1, errata], 8, [1, blank]. A Near Fine copy with some scuffing to boards and joints, and small chip to foot of spine. Contemporary ownership inscription to front endpaper: "Margaret Jane Palliser. Dublin 1824." A scarce work of juvenile fiction aimed at young women, it is unrecorded in OCLC and Sadleir (though there is mention of a later 1824 "fourth edition" and an American edition from 1827). Simple on its surface, each new chapter of Harriet and Her Cousin unfolds a new layer of prejudice that all too commonly prevents young women from finding meaningful connections with each other. Raised in a rural religious household, young Harriet has a spiritual awakening that leaves her soul altered. More excited about the world and the people around her, and more capable of… Read More

Description:
London: Bloomsbury, 1998. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. Full number-line on the copyright page, original price of 10.99 (pounds) on the front flap. Inscribed by the author on the dedication page "To Roz J K Rowling." A Near Fine copy in like dust jacket. Previous owner's name on the front free end paper and the binding a bit cocked. Dust jacket with some rubbing at the extremities but without any real chips or tears. The second novel in J.K. Rowling's unbelievably popular Harry Potter series, the book follows Harry Potter and his friends as they investigate a series of attacks on students at Hogwarts, possibly emanating from the Chamber of Secrets. "The Chamber of Secrets" was, of course, an instant bestseller and won Rowling the British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year for the second year in a row. Strangely enough, Rowling requested the manuscript back for revisions after delivering it to the publishers, worried that it might not live up to the success of her first book. The book… Read More

London: Bloomsbury, 1997. First edition. Fine. First impression of the preferred hardcover issue, with all the requisite points: Bloomsbury imprint, 10-down-to-1 number line, and in the list of equipment on page 51 "1 wand" appearing twice, "Philospher's" typo on the rear board. Original matte laminated boards without a jacket. A Fine copy, appearing unfaded and unread. No names or markings internally. A clean sharp copy. Only 500 copies of the first printing of Philosopher's Stone were issued in this hardback format, of which more than half were taken by libraries and rendered undesirable for collectors. Housed in a custom quarter-leather clamshell case. Harry Potter is the most successful book franchise of all time, with over 600 million copies of the books in print, and with spin-off film and media projects worth billions. The true first edition has been no less meteoric in its rise to the top of collectors' lists for modern books. Copies consistently set new records at auction. "The books'… Read More

New York: Arthur A. Levine Books - Scholastic, 1998. First American Edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. A Near Fine copy of the book in like jacket. Spine ends a bit pushed in, but unmarked, without previous owner's names or bookplates. In a very attractive dust jacket with "The Guardian" blurb on the rear panel (as required for the first issue jacket). Jacket spine ends also pushed in and one small nick at the top front corner. Overall, a handsome copy of a book that reshaped popular culture. This first print run was limited to 30,000 copies. Later volumes in the series had initial print runs that soared into the millions. Initiating Rowling's now-classic series, Sorcerer's Stone introduced Harry Potter and the wizarding world to muggle readers across the U.S. Released soon after the British first edition titled Philosopher's Stone, the novel follows the orphan Harry as he discovers the truth about his parents, leaving the abusive home of his aunt to begin his magical training in the hallowed halls of… Read More

Description:
London: Printed for Thomas Tegg, 1824. Second edition. Four octavo volumes in the publisher's blue-grey paper-covered boards with cloth spines and paper spine labels. Complete with the engraved frontis of Thomas Warton. Staining along spine edge indicates some type of repair to the spine, but no cloth added, not rebacked, recased or otherwise muddled by restoration. Paper worn from board edges and spine cloth chipped at extremities, but internal contents are generally attractive. Warton's work on English Poetry, originally published 1774 - 1781, was quite valuable to the academic community, but Price's editorial notations in the second edition are quite phenomenal. He discusses the importance of Beowulf at length and highlights a few of the alliterative poems contained in M.S. Cott. Nero A.x. This is the first publication of any work from this manuscript, which includes: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, Cleanness, and Patience. All works are attributed to the same author, although still… Read More

Philadelphia: B&J Johnson, 1800. First American edition. Bound in self-wraps with the header Cheap Repository Number 17 to title page. First and final pages detached but present, else the chapbook pages are holding. Internally clean and complete. After the Cheap Repository released parts 1-2 of Black Giles the Poacher and a sequel Tawny Rachel in the London imprint in 1796, they distributed American editions from Philadelphia in 1800 (Cheap Repository Numbers 15, 16, and 17). About as rare as its English predecessor, the American first edition of Tawny Rachel is held by 5 institutions according to ESTC, and it last appeared at auction in 1959. "Cheap Repository Tracts were a popular series of chapbooks written by evangelist Hannah More. Cheaply produced and therefore affordable to many, these moral tales were intended to discourage political dissent and unscrupulous lifestyles. Politically conservative, the stories were made more appealing by the addition of woodcut illustrations" (British Library).… Read More

On each leaf is a Bible verse, printed in black and red on a gold background; on the verso is a full-page color illustration on a gold background. The text and the illustrations are within elaborate illuminated borders. A wonderful example of Victorian chromolithography at its very best by one of the masters of the art form.
