London: Leonard Smithers and Co, 1899. FIRST EDITION. ONE OF 1,000 COPIES. 215 x 155 mm. (8 3/8 x 6"). 8 p.l., 213, [1] pp. Original lavender cloth decorated with gilt flourishes, smooth spine with gilt lettering, edges untrimmed and ENTIRELY UNOPENED. Mason 385. ◆Spine slightly sunned (as virtually always), but no wear to joints or hinges and, in all, A REMARKABLY WELL-PRESERVED, OBVIOUSLY UNREAD COPY (because unopened), and without the soiling this edition is almost always found with. This is an exceptionally fine copy of Wilde's second hit play, successful like his other witty comedies, but with at least slightly more serious social and political content. Opening at the Haymarket Theatre in 1895 and continuing for 124 performances, it features as the title character a prominent politician in danger of losing his reputation because of a potentially damaging letter that the play's villain threatens to expose if the husband refuses to support the former's corrupt political agenda. The play moves… Read More

London: printed by T[homas]. S[nodham]. for Iohn Stepneth, and are to be sold at his shop at the west-end of Paules Church, 1612. FIRST EDITION. 205 x 155 mm. (8 x 6"). 18 p.l., 611, [1] pp. (601-08 misnumbered 561-68), [8] leaves. New unlettered limp vellum by Courtland Benson in imitation of the original binding. STC 1896; ESTC S124314. ◆Half a dozen gatherings a little browned, occasional mild foxing or small rust spots, additional trivial imperfections, otherwise an excellent copy, clean and very fresh, in a pleasing new binding. This conversation manual by an Italian teacher based in London offers an intriguing glimpse into the lives and concerns of the wealthier classes in 17th century Europe. An early effort to teach language through dialogue, the book is part cultural history, part guide to better health, and it is clear evidence of the importance of the study of Italian in Elizabethan and Jacobean England. The seven dialogues cover subjects from health to travel to servants, with Italian… Read More

Description:
Attractively matted. Rubrics in red, one- and two-line initials in brushed gold on a red or blue ground, EACH SIDE OF LEAF WITH A BRUSHED GOLD PANEL BORDER, WITH VERY PRETTY ILLUSIONISTIC FLOWERS OR COMPLEX KNOTWORK; WITH ONE SMALL MINIATURE (measuring approximately 40 x 25 mm.) depicting St. Anne. Headlines written in French in a later (18th century?) calligraphic hand. ◆A stain in about half the lower margin (not affecting decoration or text), light general soiling, rubrics faded and gold a little dulled in places, image of the young Mary a little rubbed in one place, but still a very attractive specimen with an especially touching miniature. From a charmingly decorated 15th century prayer book, this lovely leaf offers the opportunity to acquire a very nice miniature with considerable gold ornamentation at an attainable price. The image depicts St. Anne, venerated as the mother of the Virgin, shown here with daughter Mary at her side. This tender scene between mother and child is accentuated by the… Read More

Description:
Paris: Desgodets et Gérard [but not an actual imprint], 1901. n. This is at once a lovely and puzzling little manuscript that seems to have been designed for use in a way that never materialized. The text contains prayers used before, during, and after Mass as well as the complete Mass for celebrating a marriage, and since the latter section is preceded by a title with an escutcheon bearing the initials "S" and "L," it seems reasonable to speculate that the work might have been intended as a wedding gift for the bride and groom whose names began with those letters. Whatever the intention, it is entirely possible that this manuscript was not used for its envisioned purpose. Possibly our artist ran out of time to complete this project, as 15 pages are left uncolored, and the text in the Mass skips from the Epistle Prologue to the middle of the Creed, with two blanks in between. Perhaps the missing text was too big for the space left to fill, or perhaps those who commissioned… Read More
