Howard by nearly 30,000 votes on November 6, 1861. Maryland had seemed to teeter on the brink of secession just 6 or 7 months earlier. Bradford's speech here discusses this phenomenon and what he considers false and misleading impressions then circulating in regard to Maryland's true sentiments and sympathies.
