Description:
Fairfield, CT: by the author/Fairfield County Publications, 1954. Large octavo, 372 pages + 6 page tipped in "supplement". Illustrated throughout. First edition. Perhaps the greatest of ice carving manuals. If you've ever wondered why the naked woman carved from ice is so muscle-y, look no further. Instructions include guidance to leave the arms extra thick to account for melting. The six-page supplement is creased, and there are small stains from the adhesive used with the supplement, otherwise near fine. Inscribed at length by the author on the free front endpaper.

Description:
Firenze: Adriano Salani, Editore, 1901. Small octavo (17.5 x 12 cm.), 359 pages. Frontispiece (see description below) and one diagram (a banquet table, from above, set for twenty-four persons). First edition. The earliest recorded copies of this title were printed by Salani in 1904, and there were numerous subsequent printings (see Orazio Bagnasco, II, pages 1406-1407). A recipe collection and guide to the Italian peninsula. L'arte di mangiare presumes a certain focus on batters, grains, creams, and sauces. One might linger over Fritelle di Erbe Odorose (fragrant herb fritters, no. 293) or a regional Sfogliatine with candied fruit (no. 672). But the seven hundred ninety-six numbered recipes insistently embrace fish (tench, bream, mullet, paraghi, carpione), game, and the full complement of bovidae - not to forget hooves, stomachs, testicles, and tongues. The indispensable note "salateli allora quanto basta" ("then add salt to taste") recurs, but precision of measurement is enlisted when needed:… Read More

Description:
North Berkeley, California: Cumbernauld Co., Publishers, 1896. Sextodecimo, 338 pages. FIRST EDITION. A notable contribution toward understanding the relationship between nutrition and the gastrointestinal tract, well before advances made during and after World War I in electrogastography and in managing bacterial pathogens. Having established a reputation for the treatment of seasickness, Dr. Herman Partsch (1849-1934), a physician in San Francisco, turned next to summarizing what he had encountered in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal distresses. "In writing this book my object has been to put on record certain facts that I have learned during the last twenty-five years on topics comprehended under the title of dyspepsia [...]" (--preface, page v). Includes observations showing the emergence of an appreciation for correlating data from other systems (heart, respiration) and gives weight to evidence from the letters and diaries of Darwin and Carlyle. Hartford: Sold by Ira Webster...; [Stereotyped by Richard H. Hobbs, 1848. Octavo (19.5 x 12 cm.), xi, 12-236 pages. Frontispiece, plus folding, hand-colored plate. Illustrated with woodcuts in the text. Though styled "Eleventh Edition" on the title page, this is evidently the FIRST EDITION, likely 12th or 13th printing. Likely the second appearance with the color calendar (Lowenstein first indicates the color illustration in the "Twelfth Edition" of 1850). As such, this is the second issue of the earliest-known American cookbook to contain a color illustration. The author describes herself as "experienced in the vicissitudes of life and in housewifery; whom admonitory years now invite to a more retired and less active life, cheered by affectionate remembrances..." (from the title page). "Mrs. Webster was at best, what one would call a good plain cook, and yet she too reflects some of the virtues of her time", wrote Karen Hess, who stops to point out that up to Mrs. Webster, "most cookbook writers...… Read More

First edition, second printing, although styled Second Edition on the title page. "Mrs. Webster was at best, what one would call a good plain cook, and yet she too reflects some of the virtues of her time", writes Karen Hess, who stops to point out that up to Mrs. Webster, "most cookbook writers... measured dry ingredients by weight rather than volume." Mrs. Webster advises measuring rather than weighing, a serious step in the degradation of American cooking skills. This book is also one of the first to include a recipe for bread made with Sylvester Graham's flour, and Hess stops again to lament that "one of our earliest "health"-bread recipes is also one of the first to call for sweetening - a pattern that has only intensified since." Elgin, Ill: Brethren Publishing House, 1908. Stated twelfth edition (an exemplar from a print run identified as "Fifty-Second Thousand" based on the first edition). Perpetually in demaind during the first decades of the last century, a church cookbook that heralded the redefinition of community occasioned by the ascendancy of mass print media. "This Cook Book originated," readers learn forthwith, "with the Inglenook Magazine, published at Elgin, Illinois, and is made up of unsolicited recipes, contributed entirely by Sisters of the Brethren, or Dunker, Church." A much admired publication with one thousand attributed recipes sent in by subscribers to the weekly serial (named for the architectural recess adjoining a kitchen fireplace) issued by the Schwarzenau Brethren (or Dunkers, in the United States) between 1900 and 1913, from their publishing house in Elgin.
