first edition tall 8vo. xiv, [2], 500pp., 19 plates (of which 8 are coloured), large folding map, wood-engraved illustrations in text, publisher's green cloth, decorative blind border on sides, spine gilt lettered, neatly recased, new endpapers of old paper, very good. William Henry Brett (Dover, 1818 - 1886) exhibited religious inclinations from his youth and in 1840 was sent by Society for the Propagation of the Gospel as a missionary to Guiana. He spent almost forty years there as a missionary and travelled widely throughout the region. The first issue of the first British edition is indicated by the price being altered in ink in the printed list of Stevenson's works on the verso of the first leaf (facing the half-title). Some copies of the first British issue have the advertisements at the rear dated "7 G- 9.92" but most copies have advertisements dated as in this copy "7G - 3.93.". The book had first appeared in the U.S. 5 days earlier. These stories are set on the island of Samoa where Stevenson spent his last years.
