I: mat size 500 x 375 mm., [19 ½  x 15 inches] and image size 485 x 320 mm [19 x 12 ½ inches].  II: mat size 500 x 390 mm.,  [19 x 15 ½ inches] and image size 485 x 360 mm.,  [19 x 14 inches].  Bright red, green, yellow and blue tones of watercolor highlighted with grey, white and brown. Signed by the Artist in lower margins.   Manuscript legend written on lower border of mat I, which reads "Clapped his hands to his bloody face howling with pain and freight." Removed from original matting, card stock with some browning from age in margins, and some shadow of mat.  Original art work by the noted book illustrator and artist Frank Merrill for the first edition of W. D. Wattle's Hell Fire Harrison and an untitled watercolor signed.   Frank T. Merrill was an artist born in Boston in 1848. (8 x 5 1/4 inches). 32 pp. Engraved title-page vignette of a putti and a dolphin; two woodcut decorative initial letters, head- and tail-pieces of putti and designed backgrounds. Original red Italian decorative paper wrappers; remnants of a paper label on lower spine and a small stain to the edge of upper wrapper, light fading to upper cover, otherwise an attractive copy. Only edition of this rare laudatory poem on the joy and responsibility of marriage and the correct conduct of a mother to newborn children. The book is dedicated to Maria Luisa Boccella (Mansi) an old friend of the author and written for her daughter Isabella, who is engaged to marry Girolamo Parensi. In the poem Leornadi speaks about obedience of wife to husband, the tenderness of the man to the women, and that child birth is the expected outcome of the married life. Small folio.  300 x 210 mm., (12 x 8 ¼ inches).  Engraved architectural title-page with two women holding the crown over the text, 31 number plates of Martyrs after paintings by Niccolo Circignani engraved by Giovanni Battista Cavaliere, plus and additional plate designed by Cornelio Cort of the Holy Trinity and presumably printed by Cavaliere.  Bound in 17th century vellum with the arms of Cardinal Giuseppe Renato Imperiali gilt on both covers, set within decorative gilt borders. As the title-page reads, this copy was printed specially for Cardinal Imperiali, a nobleman from  Genoa and general treasurer under Pope Innocent XI.  There is stamp of the Imperiali Library on the title-page as well as an inscription in brown ink.  Along with the library stamp, there is printed in the pedestal on lower right of the architectural border, an "eagle with a crown", the arms of the Imperiali family, which is repeated on the covers of the vellum binding.  The book is a collection of… Read More

Milano & Paris: Nella Stamperia Sirtori & Saugrain & Lamy, 1788. Two volumes in one.  12 mo.   165 x 100 mm., [6 ½ x 4 inches]. [4], 124 pp.;  xii, 242, [4] pp.  Bound in contemporary leather backed boards over speckled marbled paper.  First Italian edition and the first French edition published nine years apart bound together in one volume.  Very good copy of these two editions of d'Apligny's classic work on mixing colors for the use in dying textiles and decorative cloth.  The detailed methods and color combinations revealed in this book were quickly recognized and an edition was printed in Leipzig the same year as the Paris edition.  This was followed by editions printed in Augsburg (1781), Moscow (1788) the same years as this Italian edition, and London (1789).  The Italian edition offered here is not cited in NUC, OCLC, and is not in the National Gallery of Art Library in Washington D.C..  It is also not cited in Cicognara's near definitive catalogue of books on art, see below.… Read More

Firenze: Grazioli, 1791. Small 4to. 175 x 125 mm (7 x 4 ¾ inches). 99 pp. Illustrated with a hand colored engraving designed by Giuseppe Piattoli and engraved by Vascellini. Later decorated paste paper boards. Very good copy. Rare first edition. Very attractive copy of Rastrelli's poem that satirizes a century's old festival originally organized in Florence by Cosimo I after the restitution of his power in 1537. The poem, followed by historical notes on Cosimo's victory, focuses on the losers in that battle, who were made to ride through the city on the backs of donkeys, and receive the wrath of the population and the humiliation that comes with defeat. The engraving is designed by the noted Florentine painter, Giuseppe Piattoli and is characteristic of his playful manner. This copy from the library of Giannalisa Feltrinelli and like so many Florentine illustrated books is very rare. OCLC lists only one copy in London, NUC adds copies at NYPL, Harvard, and Newberry. Folio.  350 x 240 mm., [ 13 x ½ x 9 ¼ inches].  [viii], 143, 96 pp. Engraved frontispiece and 24 engravings in the text.  The typographical design of the poem is Ricchi, who divided each page into two columns and separated the text with the use of decorative ornaments in the antique style. Bound in full contemporary vellum, leather title-label on the spine; vellum showing some signs of aging, but a very good copy in a contemporary binding.  This copy with an old catalogue description pasted to front free endpaper. Very good copy of this landmark book in the history of Italian book illustration and printing is illustrated by some the most important artists of the period.  Including a monumental design of the "Creation of Adam" and a smaller design of the "Expulsion of Satan from Eden" by G. Small 8vo.  150 x 105 mm., [6 x 4 inches].  lxxvii, 574 pp.  Illustrated with 170 illustrations e 24 chromolithographic plates.  Bound in white printed and decorated boards; some spotting to the boards and light foxing to the preliminary leaves, otherwise sound and not unattractive.  Fourth edition, originally published in 1907.  Giuseppe Ciocca was a principle cookery author for the Hoepli series Manuali, which brought instruction on numerous domestic arts and crafts to newly arrived city dwellers from the Italian countryside.  Cicco was the author of this work on desserts as well a book on gelato and frozen ices and a book on making candy, caramels, fruit drops.  Il Paticciere contains 700 recipes, many illustrated.  The 24 chromolithographic plates illustrate the method and style for decorating cakes, pies, and other baked desserts.  According to Salvatori, his cookery books were prepared for the professional chef as well as the home cook.   He calls this… Read More

Originally published in 1868, this is one of many editions of Nelli's recipe book that was published in Italy over a seventy five year period.  In the introduction the editor states that the reason this book of recipes has been so successful rests in the descriptions of the art of cooking in all its components and its emphasis on the culture of the kitchen and the resources that are available to the modern chef.  "Today the art of cooking is not limited to the simple preparation of food; the skilled cook must possess a vast culture and all the resources of the science."  Very good copy. Rare eulogy of President Kennedy  written by a Greek American who resided in Rome and published works on international subjects.  Con.

Title-page illustrated with a monumental architectural border in the mannerism style and floral and historiated initial letters throughout the volume.  Bound in 19th century decorated paper binding; some minor discoloration to the paper binding, otherwise very good.  Extremely rare printing of a contemporary treatise on the proportions of the human body, demonstrating the influence of Michelangelo's ideas of anatomy and the fine arts.  It was written by Vincenzo Danti, second son of the artists and engineer Giulio and brother of the mathematician Egnazio Danti, now remembered for his publication on architectural  perspective and Euclid.   Il Primo Libro is the only work by Vincenzo to survive and it was the first book in a series of fifteen projected studies that he intended to publish, based on the anatomical teachings of Michelangelo.  Danti grew up in Florence under the shadow of… Read More

Comprehensive trade catalogue published by KNY=Scheerer Company, offering thousands of medical supplies and equipment.  The work is organized into five chapters, including sections on dissection and post mortem; anesthetic and amputation; ophthalmic, nasal and oral; urethral and hernial; and gynecological. Philadelphia: T. M. Scroggy, Publisher No. 443 Vine Street, 1853. Broadside.  8vo.  210 x 155 mm., [8 x 6 inches].  Lyrics only printed in five stanzas with chorus, enclosed within a decorative printed border.  Small stain to upper right corner, corners with slight folds, otherwise an excellent copy. Rare song sheet written in Negro dialect, telling the story a young man and his true love Nell and his all the girls he met on his way to Charleston.  Lyrics by S. W. Auner who was the author of the song "My Country 'Tis of Thee" first printed in 1861. I'm off to Charleston was published in a number of editions in the 1850's, apparently the first was in 1853, printed in Philadelphia by Eckel and Johnson.  This issue published by T. M. Scroggy appeared between 1853 and 1858.  A number of editions also appeared in New York.  All editions are rare. Simpson of a new line of air-tight stoves invented by Dr. Isaac Orr. The business of supplying safe and efficient home heating and cooking products was one of the most competitive markets in the growing urban centers of the northeast. Dr. Orr's invention, was considered one of the most reliable and safe stoves produced in the 1830's and 1840's. His design and Simpson's manufacture of the air-tight stove for burning coal was considered "a good article" and won a Diploma of Merit by the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanics Association in 1844. First edition, followed by a Verona edition, with addition, printed in 1798.  A select bibliography, listing over 300 titles, by authors, editors, and commentators who were represented in the Vocabulario Della Crusca and were recognized for their contributions to the standardization of the Italian language.   The best editions of both classical and contemporary authors are described by Bravetti, who annotates his list with notes on previous edition and comments on the quality of the language used by the original authors and their editors.  This is one of the earliest bibliographical studies of Italian literature and follows the work of Giuseppe Baretti and Alessandro Pompeo Berti and Domenico Giorgi and their catalogue of the Capponi collection published in 1747.
