Description:
This is an unread First US Edition of I Saw Esau: The Schoolchild's Pocket Book, written by the English folklore experts Iona and Peter Opie. It was originally published in 1947. In 1992, it was re-published, this time full of color illustrations by the great American illustrator Maurice Sendak, best known for Where the Wild Things Are, and his many cartoons for the New Yorker.
Collected in this invaluable book are the wit and wisdom of generations of schoolchildren—more than one 170 rhymes ranging from insults and riddles to tongue twisters, jeers and jump-rope rhymes. With Iona Opie's introduction and detailed notes and Maurice Sendak's remarkable pictures—vignettes, sequences, and full-page paintings both wickedly funny and comically sad—this book offers knowledge and entertainment to readers of all ages.
This copy's dust jacket, though unclipped, is a little battered. The book itself is perfect. The spine has not been cracked; there is no indication that anyone ever opened it.

Description:
This is a first edition (1966) of I, The King, a best-selling work of non-fiction by the American writer Frances Parkinson Keyes (1885-1970). It tells the story of the Philip IV of Spain (1605-1665), an accomplished and talented man who gave us the Golden Age of Spanish culture--and then was blamed for the decline of Spain. His story is told in the context of the four women who most affected his life.
This copy is in excellent condition. The dust jacket (unclipped) has the shelfwear that you see. It did encounter a spill, which stained the inside of the back of the dust jacket, and the front endpapers as far as the Contents page. The paper has darkened, according to its age.

Other than that, it's perfect. Clean covers with no shelfwear, and no marks of any kind on the rest of the pages.

Description:
This is a first edition of The Impressionists, part of the The Universal History of Painting, a series published in 1979 by Ferni Geneva. (I also have The Primitives of Italy from the same series.)
It was written by the highly-regarded French art critic and journalist Raymond Cogniat (1896-1977) who was, among other things, heads of the arts section at Le Figaro. However, he died while writing the book, so it was finished by the French art historian Antoine Terrasse (1928-2013).
This book does not just focus on the most famous Impressionists--it includes all of the Impressionists; the index of names is 8 columns, in small print. It is also laid out in such a way that you can cut out the color plates for framing, without interfering with the text or structure of the book. There are dozens of color plates and many drawings. Weight is 4 lbs.

Description:
This is a very handsome copy of Truman Capote's famous book In Cold Blood, which was first serialized in the New Yorker, and was published in book form in 1965. This is a first book club edition from the International Collectors Library.
It is about the 1959 murders of the Clutter family, in Kansas, by a couple of drifters. Next to Vincent Bugliosi's book Helter Skelter, it is the #1 true-crime book in publishing history.
This copy is in pristine condition, except for a tiny bit of shelf wear at the top and bottom of the spine. It is red boards covered in leather, or leatherette--I can't quite tell but I think it's leather.
There is brilliant gilt on the cover and the spine. There is a bound-in red silk bookmark.
All of the the pages are clear and creamy white; there are no marks of any kind in it or on it.

Description:
In Search of Scotland is an enduringly popular book about traveling through Scotland. It was a massive best-seller; it was first published in 1929--this copy is dated 1931 and is its 15th printing.
Seeking to close a travel-writing gap of over a hundred years, the English journalist H. V. Morton went in search of Scotland, a land to which he was a complete stranger. The result is an engaging adventure in a landscape at turns "enchanted" and "without mercy." Anecdotal, leisurely, full of character and event, insight, and opinion, this is travel writing of the very highest order.
See photos of contents.

Description:
This is a first edition of The Inside of the Cup, the best-selling 1913 novel about poverty that sparked a nationwide debate about the role of Christianity and religion in daily life.
It was written by the American author Winston Churchill (1871-1947) who, at the time, was more famous than the Winston Churchill the politician, who was also a writer. After the American wrote to him about the possibility of confusion, the latter began to publish as Winston Spencer Churchill, or Winston S Churchill, and used that signature for the rest of his life.
This copy is in near-mint condition. It has a mark on the outside edges, at the back. There is a very small signature on the front endpaper. The marks you see in the photos are fingerprints and dust and can be easily cleaned. And the paper has darkened, as you would expect with a book of its age.
