Early works by the novelist, Pop artist, playwright, and former professional wrestler ("Rosa Carlo, the Mexican Spitfire"). I AM THE BEAUTIFUL STRANGER (her first novel, Grossman: 1965) is fine in near fine dust jacket with Zimmerman's characteristically tiny penciled notations on rear blank. THE LINE OF LEAST EXISTENCE (her second play, Random House: 1967) shows slight fading at head of spine but is otherwise fine in dust jacket with crease and several short tears to head of spine. TO SMITHEREENS (her third novel, NAL: 1972) shows fading to base of spine but is otherwise fine in fine dust jacket with just few tiny nicks--and is INSCRIBED TO ZIMMERMAN, "To Paul, in admiration, Rosalyn Drexler." Altogether a near fine set, with the last volume being INSCRIBED.

Name in magic marker on verso of front endpaper (near the top), showing through on endpaper, otherwise fine in lightly soiled dust jacket with minor wear on spine ends and corners.

Spine ends bumped and rubbed, with a few small tears in the cloth binding at the top and bottom of the spine. Offset along the hinge, but inside otherwise clean. Lacking dust jacket. Not a great copy but a scarce book.

Winner in 1936 of the first-ever National Book Award under the category of "Bookseller Discovery" -- or, as it was called at the time, the "forgotten book of the year that least deserved to be forgotten." This was in the early, pre-war days when NBA's were voted on by members of the American Booksellers Association and when authors and publishers from outside the U.S. were eligible. (Alfred Knopf, who published the book in the U.S. in 1936, represented Lofts at the 1936 ceremony.) Near fine with thin line of offset to front and back endpapers; in good to very good dust jacket with 1/4" trimmed from base of rear flap, spine ends and corners nicked, few small tears, and old internal tape shadows (only evident externally in small area on upper rear panel). Scarce in the true first edition and especially so in the dust jacket.

The music composer and pianist Jennie Prince Black (1868 - 1945) was a life-long resident of Irvington, NY, and the person responsible for the memorial to Washington Irving there. There is a chapter dedicated to the story of "the memorial started in 1919 and finished in 1926," including a recounting of the strange phenomenon that occurred the night of her address at Irvington Town Hall on the 50th anniversary of Irving's death. She also writes about playing on the grounds of the Irving estate and the one time she was invited inside; about growing up in the area; and about the famous people who have visited the area. All are near fine with light edgewear in a plain black slipcase that is structurally sound but rubbed at edges exposing cardboard in few spots.

The title is from the last line of the first poem, "Lo Speccio" -- "How will I brush my hair tomorrow/ If only I were bald." Near fine with just a little fading to spine fold in what appears to be original acetate.

According to Beilke, although this was the only poem she ended up having printed, it is the second of two (or more) given to him by Edith Greenan Kuster, hence it having been numbered "II" [Broomfield A89]. 8.5 x 11" heavy off-white card stock printed in black and blue.
