In a more narrow sense, the term De Stijl is used to refer to a body of work from 1917 to 1931 founded in the Netherlands. Proponents of De Stijl advocated pure abstraction and universality by a reduction to the essentials of form and colour. Beveled leading edge to front board only. Lovely patterned front endpapers. Rear endpapers non-pareil marbling, in red, navy, white, black, and tan. Front hinge started (unrepaired, but easily repairable) with mull showing, but holding. No copy appears to have come to auction since 1927. Worldcat finds but two copies in libraries worldwide. (Sabin, 17299). Concerns the protracted land dispute between Pennsylvania and Connecticut over the Western Reserve Territory, land now known as Ohio. Includes a history of the disputes, which stretched back to 1662 when King Charles II granted the land to both colonies. Sporadic physical and bureaucratic warfare ensued until 1800, when the land was ceded to Pennsylvania.
